UNHCR Pledges to Continue Operating in Afghanistan

The UNHCR’s representative to Afghanistan, Leonard Zulu met with the governor of northern Mazar-e-Sharif Province Hajji Mohammad Yousuf Wafa, and vowed to continue working in Afghanistan under all circumstances.

Governor Wafa received Leonard Zulu, and his accompanying delegations in his office, and addressed a range of issues that needs UNHCR’s immediate attention in northern parts of the country.

While speaking about the implementation of different projects in the country’s northern zone, Zulu said, the UN agency was fully committed to working in the country and delivering life-saving support to the people of Afghanistan during these difficult times.

UNHCR has launched several projects in the areas of housing, health, education, construction of educational institutions and more in northern Afghanistan, the Head of UNHCR in the northern region of the country Lachine Mansowa said.

Furthermore, the UN agency has been persistently helping with internally displaced people throughout the country, by providing shelter, food and non-food supplies, safe drinking water and more.

Meanwhile, Governor Wafa stressed that UN agencies should continue delivering humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan without linking it to politics.

He also asked the head of UNHCR to cooperate with the relevant institutions in the construction of roads, health facilities, education centers, and dams in the remote areas and the districts of the province, the statement added.
