On Sunday, Mohsen Rezaei, the captain of Afghanistan’s national taekwondo team, secured a bronze medal. Despite losing in the semi-final to South Korea’s Jang Jun, he reached this achievement.
Rzaei won the bronze medal after defeating opponents from Japan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan, with one loss against his Korean opponent.
The 9th edition of the Asian Games officially opened on Saturday, inaugurated by the Chinese President in Hangzhou.
Afghanistan participated in these competitions with a sports delegation of 128 members, including 17 female athletes.
Afghan athletes have competed in Taekwondo, rugby, swimming, and Wushu.
Mohammad Khalid Hotak, the captain of the Afghan national Wushu team, won his first match in the Hangzhou Games against his opponent from Kazakhstan, advancing to the next round.
With this victory, Hotak reached the quarter-finals, where his next opponent will be an Indian Wushu athlete.
In swimming, Fahim Anwari, an Afghan swimmer, competed in the 50m and 100m freestyle events.
He finished second in the 100m preliminary race with a time of 27.16 seconds but placed eighth in the 100m breaststroke preliminary race. Unfortunately, he did not advance to the next round.
Two Japanese athletes secured first and second place in these competitions, with a Kazakh athlete taking third place.
Meanwhile, the Afghan national rugby team has played four games in the Hangzhou competitions, losing three and winning one. They faced teams from China, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, and an independent team.
They managed to defeat only Nepal. Afghanistan will compete against the Nepalese national rugby team tomorrow to determine their final ranking in the Hangzhou rugby competitions.
Afghanistan has secured one bronze medal in Taekwondo through Mehsan Rezaei’s victory in the competition.
