The first board examinations after the Covid-19 pandemic showed an increase in the results and performances by 5.80 percent compared to the performance of 2021.
The results show an overall pass percentage of 87.80 percent this year compared to 82 percent in 2021.
The education ministry and Bhutan Council for School Examinations and Assessment (BCSEA) announced the results yesterday.
An official from the BCSEA said that the increase in the overall percentage is owing to two reasons.
“The assessment criteria, which was introduced in 2021, required students to score 40 percent both in continuous assessment (CA) and in the main examination or the theory which affected the performance of the students that year as it was new,” the official said.
The official added that this year’s performance improved because the students who sat for the exam came through the new assessment criteria when they were in Class XI.
“Another reason is because of the pandemic. Back in 2021 the students could not attend classes properly and this affected their performance,” the official added, “But after the pandemic, the students were able to attend full instructional classes.”
A total of 13,490 candidates from 84 Higher Secondary Schools (HSS) registered, and 13,373 appeared for the examination, out of which 1,631 students did not pass.
For the Class VIII BCSEA examinations, a total of 11,849 candidates registered from 176 schools. Of the total, 11,821 appeared for the exams.
Toppers
From the Science stream, scoring 89.50 percent, Rigzay Lhamo from Ugyen Academy topped the exam. Pema Deki Yangden from Jakar HSS and Jamyang Dorji from Karma Academy both came in second place scoring 88.75 percent. Tshering Choden from Ugyen Academy and Pema Rinzin from The Royal Academy came third by scoring 88.25 percent.
A total of 85.85 percent of the Science students passed their exams.
With 90.50 percent, Pema Wangchuk from Desi High School topped the Commerce stream. Both Yadsel Lhazin Tshhogyel and Choki Dorji from Desi High School came in second, scoring 90 percent. Rupa Phuyal from Damphu Central School and Chadri Maya Subba from Ugyen Academy secured the third position scoring 89.75 percent.
Of the 4,123 Commerce students who appeared for the exam, 87.63 percent passed.
Jamyang Kinley Pema from Motithang HSS and Euden Dema from Ugyen Academy scored 89.25 percent to top the Arts stream. Pema Selden from Ugyen Academy scored 87.50 percent and Rinzin Norbu from Karma Academy scored 86.75 percent, coming in second and third positions respectively.
A total of 88.72 percent of students from the Arts stream passed the exam.
A total of 224 students appeared for the Language and Culture Studies Certificate Class XII examinations.
Kinley Gyem scored 85.75 percent, Sonam Lhendup scored 82.75 percent, and Tshering Phuntsho scored 82.25 percent.
In the Class VIII examinations, Pema Zangmo from Wamrong Lower Secondary School came first with 94.18 percent. Jigsel Lhendrup Wangchuk from Dr. Tobgyel Middle Secondary School scored 93.95 percent and Lhawang Tshokey from Rangjung Central School scored 93.20.
