SYNOPSIS: Based on the film by Roger Corman, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of the meek Floral Shop Assistant, Seymour, and his life on Skid Row. Enamoured with his co-worker Audrey, Seymour sets out to prove himself worthy of her love, and that of the Floral Shop owner, Mr. Mushnik. One day, during a total eclipse of the sun, Seymour finds a strange and interesting plant he hopes will attract business to the struggling floral boutique. Naming the plant Audrey II, Seymour soon learns about the peculiar source of nutrition the plant requires. Only feeding on flesh and blood to survive, Audrey II manipulates Seymour into aiding in many a character’s demise. In order to win Audrey’s love, over that of her semi-satanic boyfriend, Orin, Seymour must choose if he is willing to sacrifice the lives of many. Will the plant grow to a grotesque size and fulfill its plan of world domination? Seymour must make the choice. Featuring many pop-culture hits, such as “Skid Row” and “Suddenly Seymour”, this most anomalous musical is one that will make you stop feeding your plants.

TITLE: The Crucible

SCHOOL: St. Joseph HS

DATE: April 21, 2023

SYNOPSIS: Mass hysteria is one of the most dangerous weapons recorded in human history. The Crucible, written in 1953 by Arthur Miller, is a dramatized story of the Salem Witch Trials, partially based on historical victims of this large scale delusion. During the years 1692 and 1693 in recently colonized Massachusetts Bay, a panic spreads through the town of Salem, for fear of the Devil stealing the souls of children through his witches. This fear arises from the commonly held belief that the American forest is the Devil’s last reserve, as many Indigenous people reside there and refuse to be converted to Christianity. Reverend Parris, a power-hungry, yet remarkably self-pitying man, fears rumours of witchcraft in Salem since his daughter, Betty Parris, falls ill once she is discovered dancing in the forest with her cousin, Abigail Williams, and some other girls – a sin in the eyes of the town. His suspicions are enabled by Thomas Putnam, a bitter man who increases his wealth by taking over others’ land when they are arrested. Once Reverend Hale, an expert in witchcraft, arrives at Salem in an attempt to care for Betty, accusations are thrown, numerous innocent women are arrested and condemned to death, and John Proctor must learn to face his own shame to protect his family from Abigail’s wicked vendetta. A dark tale of misery, sins, hypocrisy, and religious trauma; you will not know whether to cry, laugh, or be shocked by the time it is finished.
