Hischier, 23, tallied 60 points (21 goals, 39 assists) – career highs across the board – in 70 games last season.
Ruff also said goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood wasn’t feeling well and left Thursday’s morning skate. His status for Thursday night’s preseason game against the New York Rangers is unclear. Vitek Vanecek will play if Blackwood is unable to go.
The Devils open their season Oct. 13 at Philadelphia.
