Hartford, Connecticut (AP) — Republicans are moderate candidates who can appeal to voters in Democratic home states such as Maryland and Massachusetts has been successful with on both parties. With Democrats facing headwinds this year, Republicans hoped the strategy would pay off again.

states are nominating supporters of former President Donald Trump, making it even more likely that the Republican Party will win the general election. Massachusetts will face a unique test next month as Republican voters decide between a pro-Trump conservative or a more moderate Republican as the party's candidate for governor.

"It can't go on," said former Connecticut Rep. Christopher Shays, a moderate Republican and Trump critic, referring to the Republican party picking a pro-Trump candidate. “One thing that happens is that many Trump candidates who win the primary lose the general election, and now enter office, believing that it is in jeopardy that the Senate remains a Democrat.

Trump's influence came to light earlier this month when his last-minute endorsement led to Leola, a member of the Republican National Committee against abortion rights. Fully demonstrated when he helped propel Levy to victory in Connecticut's Republican Senate primary. The party's nominee, former House Minority Leader Themis Clarides. Clarides said she supported abortion rights and didn't vote for Trump in 2020.

"It's a sad day for CT..." tweeted Brenda Kapchik, Fairfield's first Republican elect and former state. Representatives, after the August 9th race was called to Levy. A few days ago, Kaptic tweeted after Trump endorsed Levy on speakerphone at a Republican picnic.

Kupchick's tweet sparked criticism in both Republican camps. Trump supporters have accused Clarides of not being a "true conservative." Levy's nomination puts Democratic U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal in his favor, even though moderate Republicans recorded their lowest approval ratings since his 2011 inauguration in the May Quinnipiac poll. predicted a solid victory in November.

Last Republican to represent Connecticut. Connecticut elected a moderate Republican governor in 2006 along with M. Jodi Rell, but in the U.S. Senate Lowell P. Weiker Jr. served from his 1971 to 1989.

Her Mr. Levy, who has never held an elected office before, controls high inflation and energy prices, thwarts "parent-child government intervention," and commits crimes. reinforces her message of addressing broad constituencies.

A similar dynamic is playing out in liberal Maryland, where Trump-backed far-right state legislator Dan Cox wins the GOP gubernatorial primary and leaves office. He overwhelmed a moderate rival backed by Governor Larry Hogan. critic. In Democratic-dominant Massachusetts, Republican voters cast their ballots in his Sept. 6 gubernatorial primary, taking a moderate view with Trump-backed former state congressman Jeff Deal. You will have to choose between businessman Chris Doughty. Centrist Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, a critic of Trump, opposed seeking a third term.

Democratic candidates in Maryland and Massachusetts are seen as leading candidates to overthrow the governor's mansion in those states.

Trump's endorsement propelled his candidate to victory in the top race in battleground states, boosting Democrats' optimism to win the general election. In Arizona, former TV news anchor Kari Lake, who said he would not recognize President Joe Biden's 2020 victory, is a lawyer and businessman backed by former Vice President Mike Pence and outgoing Republican Gov. Doug Ducey. Karin Taylor of He defeated Robson. In Wisconsin, Mr. Trump-backed businessman Tim Michels defeated former Lieutenant Rebecca Kleefisch, who was backed by Mr. Pence and the state party. However, both Michels and Creefish falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

In Connecticut, Levy's nomination puts her out of the mainstream in a state where Republican numbers are outnumbered by independent voters and Democrats. It is already being used as a cheer for Democrats who claim that Aside from being against abortion rights and reversing her years-old position in favor of abortion rights, Levy is also voicing her concerns about work-related COVID-19 vaccine requirements and transgender women. In his acceptance speech, Levi thanked the former president enthusiastically and promised, "I won't let you down." Blumenthal's campaign sent out a fundraising message, warning: Who would be but a rubber stamp on Mitch McConnell's dire agenda.

Levy then ties Blumenthal to Biden, casting him as a "rubber stamp" for the Democratic president's "failed policies" as president, and forcing Blumenthal to " accused of playing an important key. A role in creating virtually every challenge our country faces today.

"Dick Blumenthal wants this election to be a referendum for president. Donald Trump won't be voted in November, but Joe Biden will."

Shays, who now lives in Maryland, said he believes endorsements by Trump are disqualifying. Said he would vote for Blumenthal if he contributed to Moore's campaign and still lives in Connecticut.

"I will vote against anyone who seeks to endorse Donald Trump because it is their Because it tells you a lot about personality and what you're going to do if you win, and that's the bottom line for me," Shays said.

Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto dismissed any suggestion that Levy's primary victory signaled a political evolution within the state's Republican Party. . Rather, he said, this year's party "has candidates across the board who have different opinions on certain issues."

But what they have in common is keeping inflation under control, making Connecticut more affordable, fighting crime, and making parents the "major stakeholder" in their children's lives.

"At the end of the day, we are firmly committed to issues that matter to the people of Connecticut," he said.
