Shane Bieber pitched seven innings, Oscar Gonzalez hit a two-run double, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the hosts Detroit Tigers, 5-2, on Tuesday.
Bieber (7-6) gave up 4 singles and his 1 walk with his 8 strikeouts. Ahmed Rosario scored a run and delivered three hits, including two doubles, while driving another run as the Guardians won their third straight.
Emmanuel Clase scored his last out on his 25th save. Stephen Kwan reached base twice and scored two runs for Cleveland.
Detroit starter Tyler Alexander (2-6) in his seventh inning he allowed two runs and seven hits. He had his two strikeouts and no walks. The Tigers narrowly avoided a shutout for the second straight game as he scored on a two-out bases-loaded walk and wild pitch off Eric Haas in his ninth inning. Riley Green led the offense with his two hits.
From the start, Bieber had strikeout control over his two batters in the first against Green and Javier Baez. Bieber also recorded two strikeouts in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
Cleveland made it to the fifth inning. Owen Miller singled out on a bloop he reached on a single, and on Andres Jimenez's single he moved to third. Austin Hedges hit Miller left with a sacrifice fly.
The Guardians won Kwan and Rosario's back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, 2-0. Later in the inning, they had a runner in the corner with one out, but Josh Naylor bounced into a double play.
The Tigers were no-out with his two runners out in his seventh inning. The Bieber then struck out Willie Castro and retired Jonathan Scoop with a foul pop.Tucker Barnhart ran aground to end the threat.
Cleveland scored three runs off Will Best in the eighth inning. Kwan drew a one-out walk and Rosario followed with a single.Gonzalez completed a two-out, two-run double before scoring on Naylor's single.
The Tigers went into the ninth inning with the bases loaded without an out on his two singles, with Eli Morgan walking his one. After retiring the next two batters, Morgan walked Haase.A wild pitch by Kress allowed Detroit to give another run before Akil Badoo grounded out.
