USA pharmaceutical giant Moderna has selected Laval as the location for its new mRNA vaccine manufacturing facility in the Montreal area.
The company announced Thursday that it had signed a purchase agreement with the National Institute of Science earlier this month for land at its Laval biotechnology park.
"The site's proximity to renowned research institutes provides Moderna with tremendous synergy opportunities, and the project's requirements and importance to all Quebecers and Canadians. ,” Moderna said in a statement.
Construction, estimated at $180 million, is scheduled to begin this year. Moderna estimates that the plant could be operational by the end of 2024.
Moderna's arrival in Quebec was confirmed in April at a press conference attended by Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau and Francois Legault. At the time, Moderna indicated its intention to open a store in the Greater Montreal area, but the exact location had yet to be determined.
