Raging Newfoundland bushfires spread overnight, crews try to predict rain to quell blazes

Paradise Lake fires alone are now estimated at 10,337 hectares, up more than 50% since Monday.

A forest firefighter in Newfoundland and Labrador said rain Tuesday after raging bushfires near Grand Falls Windsor had spread more than 50 percent overnight. I'm keeping an eye on the forecast.

Jeff Motty said the size of the fires at Paradise Lake in the central Newfoundland woodlands was estimated at 10,337 hectares or 100 square kilometers — Detail More than three times the size of Bell Island and as large as the borders of the town of Gander.

On Monday he grew from 6,614 hectares.

Seaplane bombers were on the scene all day Monday, but the size of the blaze prevented firefighters from directly addressing the fire.

"We had to set the crew on fire immediately," Motti told CBC News on Tuesday.

"If you can get a lot of water bomber activity on it, you can get on the edge or plank around that fire in a safe place. Crew and Together, we can start putting out the hose lines and starting to contain the fire,' he said. It is so large that it will take a lot of time to clear the site.”

On Monday the winds of Paradise Lake moved north,  for much longer than the previous day. , a water bomber could have been on the scene, Motti said.

Uncontrollable fires have continued him for over two weeks as a result of the state's unusually hot and dry weather.

Premier He Andrew Fury has issued a state of emergency for some communities over the weekend, including Grand Falls-Windsor, Bishops Falls and Botwood. Order affects over 20,000 people.

Fury urged these residents to be vigilant in preparation for an evacuation order, and advised those with lung disease, such as asthma, to leave before large amounts of smoke could develop. I suggested. Canadian Public Security said in a tweet on Monday that anyone preparing to evacuate should make sure they have enough fuel in their car and have an emergency kit ready.

Crews will continue to assess when the highway can reopen, he said.

Crews also conducted a controlled burning in the area on Monday, destroying dry leaves and other small fire starters to limit the growth and intensity of the spreading bushfires. Did.

"There are a lot of different pieces in this puzzle that work very well, so we made a lot of good progress yesterday," he said Motty.

Tuesday's weather forecast may also help contain the spread of fire. Environment Canada forecasts say 5-10mm of rain is expected at Grand Falls-Windsor on Tuesday, with 20km/h southeasterly winds blowing up to 40 degrees and a high of 15 degrees.

Similar forecasts. Bishop's Falls will receive   10 mm of rain throughout the day.

Rain is expected over the next few days as temperatures drop.

"I hope this forecast comes true," Motti said.

"Fire and weather go hand in hand, so we need Mother Nature." 69}

This forecast is welcome news for Bishop's Falls Mayor Brian King. Ignite.

"The fire continues to grow and is very active. But the good news...is that the firefighting has continued throughout the day," King said Monday evening. He said he had never seen such an urgent effort. his time in the area. "Airstrikes and seaplanes remain active today," said Bishop's Falls Mayor Brian King on Tuesday. We are asking residents to be prepared for anything as the weather worsens. (Darrell Roberts/CBC)

Bay He Despoir's highway remains closed, so supplies are beginning to trickle into the community by helicopter. The road is the only vehicle or truck access for the small community. Connaigre From the Peninsula and Gulf region to the rest of Newfoundland. However, the boat is in St. John's for repairs due to mechanical problems. The Operations Center can be reached at 833-845-0775 8am-8pm (NT) and Central Health operates Healthline at 1-833-960-4571.

King said those on the scene would need to see how the fire behaved before they could figure out what Tuesday would be and what the next move would be. rice field.

In the meantime, he asks residents of central Newfoundland towns to be ready for immediate departure.

"We are now asking everyone to pack their bags and prepare their essentials as the situation could quickly deteriorate depending on the direction of the wind."
