She-Hulk: Smash or Pass? What works and what doesn't in Marvel's new show

With a gamma-powered leap and wink, the newest superhero in the series, She-Hulk, has landed. Jennifer Walters, played by Canadian Tatyana Maslany, is the cousin of Bruce to his banner (aka Hulk), who became a green Avenger after an accident. I realize that I have similar abilities.

When the trailer was first released, many fans noted the special effects and computer animation of her much-loved Marvel character. Now that you've seen the first four episodes of her,  Here's what works and doesn't work in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Smash. Maslany and the rest of the cast

Maslany earned a legion of fans for portraying multiple clone characters inOrphan Blackand that show was her AlthoughShe-Hulk had Maslany flex her comedic side, Mansplaining colleague jaded legal It perfectly expresses the eagle's demeanor. This She Hulk is not only the female version of the Hulk, but someone who is physically (and perhaps mentally) better at blending the Hulk's human side.

Her cousin Mark Ruffalo, who plays a more learned "clever Hulk" than , warns her of a premature career return, but Jennifer is eager to return. law. She wants to be successful in her own life, but soon discovers that it is her green-skinned alter-ego that she matches on her dating app.

Head Writer and Series Creator Jessica Gao, Rick and Mortyand robot chickens, , who worked onand  , round out the series with a steady and lovely character. Ruffalo is there as Obi-Wan in Superhero Journey. Ginger Gonzaga adds a nice touch as Nikki, Jennifer's paralegal companion, and Benedict Wong. Wong continues her winning streak as cameo king in Marvel Her Universe.

and by having Jennifer work for a law firm that specializes in metahumans, the show opens up to a multitude of possibilities, while reducing the number of annoying lawyers. 42} Increase Andy on her android awesome.

path. When the trailer for the CGI

series arrived, many fans complained about the computer animation of the title character. (Marvel Studios)

When Jennifer transforms into Sea Her Hulk, less sensational, but also Shrek her level of badass There is none. Even in the first episode alone, and appear to be mixed with the distracting colors of the Jade Giant. Deciding to go fully digital with a character is always a risk. But an expressive figure like She-Hulk brings an even more difficult level.

The first episode features an impressive level of action in a Hulk vs. She-Hulk wrestling match, but technology captures the nuances of Maslany's performance. may not be possible. There are moments when it seems like She-Hulk is in danger of slipping into uncanny valley, but Maslany's charisma, despite its superficial flaws We are selling characters.

path. Breaking the Fourth Wall

Sensational She-Hulk comic book series written and illustrated by John Byrne of Jade in 1989 It started with Giants sets itself apart by breaking down the fourth wall and calling out to the reader. (Marvel Comics)

The series includes Deadpool {76, like Ryan Reynolds' schtick, see There are moments when the Hulk speaks directly to the camera. } Gao cited the show Fleabag as a source of inspiration. Created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag used this technique to lure the viewer into the character Lulu's head in her space.

She-Hulk doesn't speak to the audience much, usually making fun of audience expectations and the Marvel universe in general.

This has comic precedents. Writer and artist John Byrne's 1989 sensational She-Hulk series featured an abandoned and broken fourth wall She-Hulk. One after another, she ranted about her villain of choice, complained about her wardrobe, and walked around comic book panels to save time. Bryne's book received more coverage than Sexist Cheesecake, but it also helped establish She-Hulk's voice. I certainly enjoy the technique, but most could use better material than the meta Marvel moments.

Smash. lawyer program.

"Lawyer Show"  Maslany's irony to the camera as she introduces us to her world is one of At its best She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a gamma radiation fusion ofBoston Legal and L.A. Law,Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight,Hawkeye, it has its own tone. With more Marvel her shows than Armor's version of Iron Man, there's certainly enough material for her street-level shows about superhero hiccups and lawsuits.

But if She-Hulk is suffering from anything, it's her usual Marvel ailment of not being able to fully commit . On one level, Allie wants to be her McBeal zany procedure, and Walters is involved in her love life and her legal career. I'm trying to balance my career. But instead of cross-examining witnesses, as Marvel does, we get her C-level supervillain fights needed. There is hope here. No longer will office politics and legal affairs be too much of an afterthought to crush the bad guys.

Jennifer quickly learns to enjoy the attention she gets as a green-skinned alter-ego. (Marvel Studios)
