When I was in London in the summer of 2001, I always traveled to the original Rough Trade Records store on Talbot Street, just off Portobello Road in Notting Hill. I was a little confused at the time, worried that the music might have got stuck.
I desperately needed some comfort and inspiration. The mainstream was full of pop music: Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, "NSync, Britney Spears. After the grunge burned out, alternative rock got lost. The big act was looking for direction. There were too many launchers, and the biggest new metal at the time was very, very polarized. It wasn't me.
Besides, "Electronica" A new genre called was sucking up a lot of rock fans. Music made the old-fashioned way with guitar, bass, drums and vocals, looked outdated and played.
But that wasn't true. In the past, every time a rock was declared dead, someone or something came and breathed new life into everything.
The story that follows the ad
This is the story I told Nigel, the guy behind the counter in a small Rough Trade shop. "Give me something exciting, new and fresh," I said. "Please hope!"
Nigel reached out under the counter and took out the CD single. "Here, my companion," he said. "This should cure your illness." It was a song by the New York group The Strokes, not a British band.
Trend Story
I found out he was right. The Strokes were one of the very first new bands behind the resurgence of indie rock that began in the late 90's and exploded in the next few years. Like, Nigel.
But why the Strokes? Where did they come from? And why did this guy in London tell us about the band in New York? This needs some explanation.
Songs I listened to on this show (all songs from The Strokes):
- Bad decision
- Last night (demo)
- Difficult to explain
- Someday
- Juicebox
- Under Cover of Darkness
- One Way Trigger
- Drag Queen
