Forbes Magazine has named the the Upper Canada District School Board as one of the best employers in the country.
The public school board includes schools in areas surrounding the City of Ottawa. It was recognized by the renowned business magazine as one of Canada’s best employers for 2023.

It was ranked No. 79 out of 300 and was the highest-ranking school board to be included in the list.
“This recognition is meaningful to us as this list of top employers is generated through independent research and surveys done with our own employees by Forbes and Statista Inc. This is not a program or study we knew was taking place,” the board’s director of education, Ron Ferguson, said in a statement.
According to Forbes, the ranking was based on a survey of more than 12,000 Canadians working for companies and institutions with at least 500 employees.
Participants were asked to rate how likely they were to recommend their current employer, and could recommend employers other than their own. Those factors and others were used to create the final list of 300, according to the magazine’s website.
In a statement, the school board said staff culture is a priority, and “ensuring that staff feel supported by the district in their work and have the resources they need to be successful” are part of the school board’s strategic plan.
The school board employs around 4,200 people across its vast territory, and has a roster of 27,000 students at its 57 elementary schools, 21 secondary schools, and the TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative, and Continuing Education campuses.
“While students are the heart of our organization, our staff is the backbone. We will continue to work on ways to support our staff and provide a working environment where everyone feels appreciated, welcomed and connected to the organization’s goals,” said Ferguson.
John McAllister, chairman of the board of trustees, said the board is “ecstatic” about the recognition.
“A lot of work has been done to ensure staff feel appreciated, are supported in their work and are able to have a positive work-life balance,” McAllister said in the release.
“Our organization will continue to work toward these goals, as we want our employees to be happy at work and know they are appreciated each day.”
