ACCRA — Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leaders impose on Mali on Sunday after military rulers propose a 24-month transition to democracy and announce a new election law. Lifted the economic and financial sanctions imposed.
The leaders' meeting in Akra also accepted a pledge from the junta that seized power in Burkina Faso in January and restored constitutional order in 24 months.
However, ECOWAS leaders rejected the three-year transition proposed by a coup leader who seized power in Guinea in September. They told the Guinean junta to propose a new timeline or face economic sanctions by the end of July. (Report by Cooper Inveen and Christian Akorlie, Written by Bate Felix, Edited by Kevin Liffey)
