What you need to know about the celebration of Canada Day in Ottawa

Today, red and white waters are expected to gather in downtown Ottawa and Lebreton Flats to celebrate Canada's 155thbirthday.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the first face-to-face Canada Day event in Ottawa in three years and the first Canada Day with events at Gatineau's Lebreton Flats and Place de Festival Givi.

Ottawa police said there was a visible police presence throughout the downtown area to keep people safe and in the event of a protest.

"Now don't worry. This is a festival. This is to celebrate Canada. Therefore, we need to prepare a plan and resources around it." Interim Chief Steve Bell is Evan Solomon. I told the show. "It will be a safe environment, that's why we're here to ensure it."

The car control zone is west of Sussex Drive / Colonel By Drive in the east. It remains valid in the area from Booth Street in the north to Wellington Street in the north to Lori Air Avenue in the south. There are no street parking or stops in this area. Vehicles that do not follow the rules may be ticketed and towed.

Along with the Alexandra Bridge, Portage Bridge and Chaudière intersection, several roads in the heart of downtown and around Lebreton Flats will be closed all day.

Today, there are several events being held by the "Freedom" group throughout Ottawa. However, police announced late Thursday night that the family day picnic at Strascona Park was cancelled. 

"The Guard has decided to cancel the planned Family Day picnic event at Stratocaster Park in light of the recent incident in Ottawa," said the Guard. Police said on Facebook.

"I apologize to everyone who planned to participate. I'll provide more details in the next few days.

LEBRETON FLATS

According to the Canadian Cultural Heritage, LeBreton Flats on Canada Day has signs, flags and flag rules.

Cardboard and coloplast signs and flags are allowed, but wood and metal signs are not allowed. The maximum size is 61 cm x 24 cm x 1 cm. The

flag can be used by hand, but cannot be attached to structures or masts.

"All signs and flags cannot be left unattended. Messages that promote obscene, offensive, or hatred are prohibited," said the Canadian Cultural Heritage.

According to OC Transpo, the OC Transpo bus on the Confederation Line operates free of charge.

If you go to LeBreton Flats, you can use the Confederation Line. Alternatively, take the bus to Gare de Lyon and walk to the entrance to the event venue on Wellington Street.

Societe de Transport del'Utaue (STO) will provide free service on July 1st. This is the only option to get to and from Gatineau.

Road Closure

Due to the celebration of Canada Day, several roads around the Council Area, downtown Ottawa and Lebreton Flats are closed today. It has been.
