October is already here and with it some key changes to mark through the month, ranging from rising energy costs to an important changes for UK firms.
Further abroad, Scots going to France for half-term could be caught out by new driving fines. Owners of petrol, diesel and electric cars could be liable to pay penalties as measures come to effect.
Additionally, autumn's shorter days and longer nights mean the clocks will change before we know it. Read on for five changes to keep on top of this month.
Energy price increase
Ofgem, the Government regulator for the gas and electricity, confirmed in August that it would update price caps quarterly rather than twice a year. The latest increase came into effect on October 1.
Millions of households across the UK will be paying higher gas and electricity bills. From the first of the month, the price of electricity jumped from 28p per kWh to 34p. Likewise, the cost of gas has also risen, going from 7p per kWh to 10.3p.
Standing charges have gone up a penny from 45p per day to 46p for electricity and 27p to 28p for gas.
Energy discount begins
Soaring energy costs are a pressing concern as people across the country attempt to cope with the rising cost of living. Former chancellor Rishi Sunak introduced the Energy Bills Support Scheme to deal with the crisis back in May.
The first instalment of the £400 scheme began in October with most households to be given a discount on their bills over six months. Pensioners who receive the Winter Fuel Payment will also get a one-off £300 payment.
Driving fines in France
October will also see the introduction of rules designed to help electric car owners in France. Any EVs parked in front of a public charging station must be connected and charging or motorists risk a hefty €58 (£52) fine.
In Marseille, British drivers could be fined from October - particularly if they own a petrol or diesel car. Police in the city began issuing fines on October 1 to Euro 2 vehicle, with cars registered between 1997 and 2000 likely to be affected, the Express reported.
New change for businesses - October 3
The new cabinet headed by Liz Truss introduced a measure 'slashing' red tape that came into effect on October 3. More firms are to be categorised as small businesses, making them exempt from reporting requirements and other regulations in the future.
The PM announced plans to widen these exemptions to businesses with fewer than 500 employees for future and reviewed regulations. The Government estimates the change will affect 40,000 businesses.

Clocks change - October 30
Yep, it's already that time of year. Daylight saving time - which started on March 29 - is coming to an end this month. Brits will be treated to another hour of rest at the end of the month.
The change will take place when clocks strike 2am on Sunday, October 30 and jump back one hour.
