Rangers on the other hand need to try and stem this.

A wounded Liverpool could cause van Bronckhorst's team a torrid night.

  • Liverpool 1-0 Rangers

    9. This is a big test for Rangers now as Liverpool win another corner.

The last thing the Scottish side would have wanted was to concede an early goal.

The referee has a word with Nunez for standing in front of the Rangers' free-kick.

  • Liverpool 1-0 Rangers

    7. What a fantastic strike by Alexander-Arnold.

He bends the ball into the top corner, McGregor with no chance.

Anfield erupts as the ball hits the back of the net.

  • Goal - Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

  • Liverpool 0-0 Rangers

    5. Rangers managed to scramble the corner away, looking nervous in defence.

Not the sort of thing you want to show a side like Liverpool.

It is like a shark sensing blood in the water.

  • Kick-off: Liverpool vs Rangers

The atmosphere at Anfield is electric.

Rangers get the game started, hoping to cause an upset tonight.

Both sides seem pumped for tonight's game.

The 'Battle of Britain' is finally underway.

  • Rangers' fans loud and proud

The travelling support from Scotland are making themselves heard in Anfield this evening.

Trying to drown out the spine-tingling echoes of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off.

Rangers will be hoping to give their fans something to cheer this evening.

  • Fortress Anfield to provide stern test

Liverpool have won 13 of their last 15 home Champions League group stage matches (D1, L1), scoring 36 goals in the process.

Their solitary defeat was against Atalanta in November 2020.

European nights at Anfield are something a player will always remember, heavy defeats are something they will never forget.

  • Battle of Britain heats up

Liverpool's last meeting with Scottish opponents in the European Cup was in 1980-81.

They won 5-0 on aggregate against Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen.

The Reds went on to win the competition that year.

  • Back to the promised land

This is Rangers' first taste of Champions League group stage action for 12 years and the big step up in the quality of opposition has been a struggle so far for the Scottish outfit.

The 'Gers were thrashed 4-0 away to Ajax in their opening game before losing 3-0 to Napoli at Ibrox in the last round of fixtures.

European nights at Anfield are just what Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side battled so hard for in the qualifying rounds of the competition, now they can absorb the atmosphere and occasion, reaping the rewards of their hard work.

  • Double-header key for Reds

Liverpool's 2-1 win over Ajax in their previous group game was their only win in their last four games in all competitions.

Having lost their opening group game to Napoli, Liverpool will be aiming for back-to-back wins against Rangers to close the gap on the Italians.

With Napoli having two games against a lively Ajax team, Klopp will be hoping their rivals take points off each other, allowing The Reds to get their Champions League campaign back on track.

  • Rangers starting XI:

Giovanni van Bronckhorst makes four changes to the side that won 4-0 at Hearts with a change of formation as they switch to a back five.

    1. McGregor, 2. Tavernier, 6. Goldson, 26. Davies, 38. King, 31. Barisic, 71. Tillman, 4. Lundstram, 10. Davis, 14. Kent, 20. Morelos

  • Liverpool subs:

    13. Adrian, 62. Kelleher, 2. Gomez, 3. Fabinho, 5. Konate, 7. Milner, 9. Firmino, 19. Elliott, 22. Ramsay, 28. Carvalho, 43. Bajcetic, 47. Phillips

  • Liverpool starting XI:

Jurgen Klopp makes three changes from the side that drew 3-3 with Brighton at the weekend with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all coming into the side.

    1. Alisson, 66. Alexander-Arnold, 32. Matip, 4. van Dijk, 21. Tsimikas, 14. Henderson, 6. Thiago, 11. Salah, 20. Jota, 23. Diaz, 27. Nunez.

  • Liverpool awash with sea of blue

Wherever they go in Europe, one thing you can guarantee is that the Ibrox faithful will be there in full voice.

Having had an adventure in the Europa League last season, resulting in reaching the final of the competition, tonight is what the club have been dreaming for some time.

Pitting themselves against the best sides in Europe in football's elite competition.

  • Rangers time for night of firsts

As the Rangers team bus pulls into Anfield for the first time ever in European competition, their support has travelled with them.

Having only ever won one game in England in Europe, the Scottish side could be forgiven for feeling they have nothing to lose tonight.

With a Liverpool team not firing on all cylinders yet this season, the Rangers fans will be dreaming of what they can achieve this evening.

  • Boss wary of Rangers’ threat

Speaking about the challenge of tonight’s game, the Liverpool manager spoke about what Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side pose in terms of threat:

Rangers are a good football team and well coached. They had an exceptional season in Europe last season. That's what we have to prepare for. We expect a proper fight, a real fight.

    Jurgen KloppLiverpool
  • Faltering Reds with point to prove

Liverpool prepared for tonight’s game coming from 2-0 down against Brighton at Anfield to draw 3-3 in an entertaining encounter.

After managing to get themselves a 3-2 lead in the game, The Seagulls managed to draw level as Leandro Trossard completed his hat-trick.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have only managed two wins from their opening seven league games with the Champions League proving a welcome distraction from their disappointing start to their league campaign.

  • Rangers ruthless in match build-up

Rangers prepared for their trip to Anfield with a 4-0 victory against Hearts in Edinburgh.

Former Liverpool winger Ryan Kent was among the scorers and will no doubt relish a trip back to his old stomping ground.

A trip to Anfield is not ideal for a team yet to claim a point in the group but facing an out-of-form Liverpool side may instil some confidence in the visitors.

  • Welcome to Liverpool vs Rangers

Liverpool welcome Rangers to Anfield this evening for the first European meeting between the two sides, with Jurgen Klopp looking to get his side’s season back on track.

Having lost their opening two fixtures of the group stages, Rangers can ill afford another defeat in the competition.

Scotland left-back, Andrew Robertson, will miss out on tonight’s tie as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Ibrahima Konate is back in training following a knee injury also but may be rested this evening to manage his comeback.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are long-term absentees which is why they were excluded from Liverpool’s Champions League squad.

Curtis Jones, Calvin Ramsay, Kaide Gordon and Caoimhin Kelleher are all expected to remain sidelined.

Klopp is expected to make a few changes from the starting XI on the weekend with Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott all providing offensive options to the German manager.

Rangers travel without James Sands, who serves a one-match suspension following his red card against Napoli, with former Liverpool centre-back Ben Davies likely to partner Connor Goldson in the heart of defence.

Morelos could replace Colak in attack to provide more industry and link-up play, with Steven Davis likely to be called upon in midfield for his experience and calm head in possession.
