Thousands of seniors claiming attendance benefits may miss payments from DWP

According to a new report by the National Audit Office (NAO) on Accounting for the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), the overpayment rate for Attendance Pay is estimated at 4.3. %, equivalent to approximately £230m. The overpayment of benefits is 2.2% or £120m.

These estimates show thatattendance allowanceshave the lowest overpayment rate, excluding state pensions, according to public watchdogs, but the DWP It shows the highest underpayment rate of all the benefits extracted from the report. Fraud and error exercises for 2021-22.

Attendance allowancewas measured for the first time and was £61.85 weekly for 1,406,431 seniors across the UK, including 123,909 in Scotland. or 92. Claims to be worth £40. , should be a strong nudge to make sure they're getting the right awards.

4. If the 3% underpayment rate is taken at face value and there is no indication of which claimants will be affected, as many as 60,476 pensioners have missed about £3,803 each. It could mean that

According to the NAO report, nearly all underpayments of attendance allowances are classified as claimant errors.

Historically, the DWP has used the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) as a surrogate rate for attendance allowance.

DLA has an overpayment rate of 1.9% and an overpayment rate of 2.5%. This means that until this year, DWP likely underestimated the total fraud and error rates in attendance.
