In 1911, King Attah Ameh Oboni was born in the Nigerian hamlet of Ugwolawo, close to Kogi State. He was the heir apparent to the Ata monarchy when he was a young man. He finally won the right to reign, and he ruled Igala Land for ten years. During his time as King, he developed the local schools and the Igala kingdom experienced economic growth.
In addition to being an African traditional leader, Attah possessed considerable influence. He had a commanding voice, and his prophecies came true. His predictions were always realized. Many people were aware of his magical abilities, and they were in awe of his special supernatural talent.
Attah had the authority to decide what would happen to someone if they misbehaved, disobeyed, or showed disrespect to him. When required, he never refrained from speaking. Every time he talked, it was instantaneous.
Attah’ s status as a monarch came with a lot of dos and don’ ts. These customary conditions included some peculiar ones. As a king, he was prohibited from seeing corpses, from taking off his cap in front of people, and from shaking hands with ladies. Unfortunately, he eventually ran into issues as a result of several of these restrictions.
He refused to bow to the Queen and was punished
Many traditional leaders attended a summit that was held in Kaduna. Also present was the Queen. Attah was hesitant to take off his cap as he greeted the Queen, unlike the other rulers. He was unable to shake the Queen’ s hand or remove his cap in front of the public like other people could. What should he do?
Attah was coerced into taking off his cap and made an attempt to bow to the Queen after being threatened with being sent outside and dethroned if he persisted in refusing. He had a lot on the line, and being deposed would prevent his heirs from inheriting the kingdom. To his people, he was a miniature god, and to bow to a man was to dishonor him.
Attah complied with the request, and as soon as he took off his cap, a large number of bees flew out. The meeting room was immediately swarming with bees. As soon as this happened, everyone fled. Sadly, a few participants were bitten by the bees, which abruptly ended the meeting.
While all of this was going on, Attah gave the Oba of Benin advice to walk outside before taking off his hat.
The Aftermath
Following the awful bee incident, Attah was taken into custody and handcuffed by some security personnel. The shackles slid off his hands despite the arrest. He was locked up and placed in a room by the authorities, but after some time he vanished.
The Queen demanded that Attah be removed from his position as a traditional king because she was upset by what had occurred. He also seemed to have hardened and become uncontrollable. Additionally, some of the Kings were not pleased with how the bees attacked them or how the meeting concluded in an odd fashion.
