GEORGE TOWN: A former diplomat has been released from remand days after his arrest when police found 100 cannabis trees growing in his country home in Pahang.
However, the man’s son remains in custody until Monday.
Their lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, told FMT that the father was released after a magistrate in Bentong rejected a police application for a remand order for another seven days. The two men were being investigated for cultivating and trafficking drugs.
The former diplomat and his son were arrested in Shah Alam last Saturday after police found the cannabis farm at his home at Janda Baik.
Shafee, who represented the diplomat at the remand hearing today together with Rahmat Hazlan, said they would argue against any request to extend the son’s remand.
The police swoop on the property is said to be the largest cannabis plant seizure so far, as past cases involved plants grown in pots.
Police said they found rows of cannabis trees planted around the house, and also dried cannabis leaves and containers of liquid believed to be cannabis oil.
There were 102 cannabis plants with a street value of about RM61,200, along with dried cannabis leaves weighing 1.02kgs and a bottle of cannabis extract, Pahang police said.
Police said one of the suspects had admitted to having grown the plants by watching a YouTube video but obtained the seeds from Kuala Lumpur.
