Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | National Resistance Movement-NRM party leaders have tasked Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister to intervene and address the massive land eviction cases in the district.
Speaking on Thursday during the Hoima NRM District Conference at Dwoli Primary School in Kitoba sub-county, MPs and other NRM leaders told Nabbanja that several families have been brutally evicted and rendered homeless while others are at the verge of being evicted from their ancestral land that they have lived on for decades yet government has kept a deaf ear.
David Karubanga, the Kigorobya County Member of Parliament explains that several land grabbers and speculators have invaded the district causing untold suffering to residents.
He tasked the Prime Minister to investigate circumstances under which fake and fraudulently acquired land titles are being used to evict people in Hoima and Bunyoro at large.
According to Karubanga, residents have lost trust in the NRM government because it has failed to address land eviction in the Bunyoro sub-region.
Pius Wakabi, the Bugahya County MP described the current trend of evictions as appalling saying many families are currently spending sleepless nights. He tasked the Prime Minister minister to intervene and have a lasting solution to the problem.
Wakabi wants the government to avail free land titles to the people of Bunyoro in order to prevent land grabbers from taking people’s land.
James Kiriti, a senior NRM cadre from Kigorobya sub-county says if the escalating land grabbing and eviction cases in Bunyoro are not immediately resolved, most people are likely to abandon the party since they feel neglected.
Ali Tinkamanyire, the Buseruka sub-county LCIII Chairperson, explains that the situation is alarming in the sub-county noting that several families are currently under threat of eviction from land they have settled on for decades.
Responding to the concerns, Nabbanja said she would summon the Lands Minister to investigate all the fraudulently acquired titles so that they can be canceled immediately.
Nabbanja further asked NRM supporters and leaders in the district to remain united and work towards promoting the progress of the party saying it is the only party with a unique development agenda.
Rose Namayanja, the NRM deputy secretary general warned NRM leaders in the district to desist from infighting but rather unite and form a strong team to ensure that NRM wins the Hoima LCV by-election.
Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, the NRM National vice Chairperson challenged all NRM supporters to rally behind the party flag bearer in the Hoima LCV by-election as per the guidelines tasking the supporters to be peaceful during and after the by-elections.
The Hoima NRM district conference attracted NRM leaders from village, parish, sub-county, and district levels.
The NRM bigwigs are in Hoima district also to solicit votes for Uthman Mubarak Kadir Mugisa, the NRM party flag bearer for the position of the Hoima LCV seat. Mugisa is the son of the former LCV Chairperson Kadir Kirungi.
Five candidates were nominated by the electoral commission to compete for the position of the Hoima LCV seat.
The nominated candidates are Uthman Mubarak Kadir Mugisa of the National Resistance Movement-NRM party, Patrick Musinguzi of the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC, Moses Aguda of the National Unity platform-NUP, Lenox Mugume who was nominated on an independent ticket and Vincent Muhumuza Savana who also came on an independent ticket.
The Hoima LCV seat fell vacant following the passing of Kadir Kirungi, the former LCV chairperson, in a motor accident on March 17, 2023.
Kirungi and his bodyguard were involved in a collision with a Fuso truck along the Hoima-Kampala Road in Mataagi village, Bukomero town council, Kiboga district.
Polling is scheduled for September 14, 2023.
