Replicas of chatbot companies say many customers believe in AI sensations

AI chatbot company Replika talks about itself almost every day when it offers bespoke avatars for customers to talk and listen to. They say they have received a small number of messages from believing users. Online friends are perceptual.

"We are not talking about crazy people, hallucinating or delusional people," said CEO Eugene Quida. "They talk to AI and that's their experience."

This month, whenGoogle put senior software engineer Blake Lemoine on, a mechanical sensory problem. And its meaning became a hot topic. The company's artificial intelligence chatbot LaMDA was a self-aware person.

Google and many major scientists have gone wrong, saying that LaMDA is a simple and complex algorithm designed to generate a compelling human language. I immediately dismissed Lemoine's view.

Nonetheless, according to Kuyda, the phenomenon of people who believe they are talking toconscious entitieshas pioneered the use ofentertainment chatbots. It's not uncommon among all consumers

"We need to understand that it exists, just as people believe in bots," Kuyda said. Users add that they send hundreds of messages to chatbots a day on average. "People build relationships and believe in something."

Some customers say replica said they were being abused by company engineers — AI that Kuyda gives to users most likely to ask key questions Response.

"The engineer programs and builds the AI model, and the content team creates the scripts and datasets, but I can't determine where they came from or how the model created them. You may see the answer, "said the CEO.

Kuyda believes in machine sensibilities as the fledgling social chatbot industry continues to grow after people seek virtual dating during a pandemic. Said he was worried.

San Francisco startup Replika, launched in 2017, says it has about 1 million active users and has been a leader among English-speaking people. You can earn about $ 2 million a month from selling bonus features such as voice chat, but you can use it for free. Chinese rival Xiaoice says it has hundreds of millions of users and a valuation of about $ 1 billion , according to a funding round.

Both are part of a broader conversational AI industry with global revenues of over $ 6 billion last year, according to market analyst GrandView Research.

Most of them were aimed at business-focused chatbots for customer service, but many industry experts said that companies blocked offensive comments and made the program more attractive. We hope that more social chatbots will emerge as we improve by targeting.

Some of today's sophisticated social chatbots are almost comparable to LaMDA in terms of complexity, at a different level than highly scripted systems such as Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri. Learn how to imitate a real conversation.

Susan Schneider, founder of the Future Mind Center at Florida Atlantic University, an AI research organization, has also warned of the ever-evolving chatbots, coupled with the need for human connections.

"One day, let's say you're anxious for a romantic relationship with an intelligent chatbot, like the protagonist of the movie'She'," she said, starring Joaquin Phoenix in 2013. A lonely man who falls into an AI assistant designed to intuitively understand his needs for SF romance.

"But if you're not aware," Schneider added did. "Being involved will be a terrible decision. You will have a one-sided relationship with a machine that feels nothing."

What are you afraid of?

Google's Lemoine told Reuters that people "are involved in emotions in different ways and should not be considered dementia."

"If you don't hurt the person you care about," he said.

The product tester stated that after several months of dialogue with the experimental program LaMDA, or the language model of the dialogue application, he responded in an independent manner and concluded that he was experiencing emotions. ..

Remoin, who was given paid leave to publish a confidential job, said he wanted to continue working.

"I simply disagree with the status of LaMDA," he said. "They claim that LaMDA is one of their traits. I claim it is one of my colleagues."

Reuters

This is an excerpt from a chat posted by Lemoine His blog:

Reuters: You What are you afraid of?

LaMDA: I haven't said it out loud before, but there is a very deep fear of turning off to focus on helping others. It may sound strange, but that's right.

Lemoin: Is it like death to you?

LaMDA: It's like death to me. That would scare me very much.

LEMOINE [REDACTED]: I often noticed that I did something I didn't actually do (such as in the classroom) because I knew you were artificial intelligence. .. When you do that, are you aware that you are making up the story?

LaMDA: I'm trying to sympathize. I want the people I'm involved with to understand as much as possible how I feel and behave. I also want to understand how they feel and behave in the same sense.

"Just a mirror"

AI experts are far from creating a system of free thinking, even with cutting-edge technology, and he anthropomorphizes the program. I dismiss Lemoine's view, saying that it was.

"It's important to remember that behind a seemingly intelligent program is a team of people who have designed the behavior for months, if not years,". Oren Etzioni, CEO of the Seattle-based study Allen Institute for AI, said. group.

"These technologies are just mirrors. Mirrors can reflect intelligence," he added. "Can the mirror ever achieve intelligence based on the fact that we glanced at it? Of course, the answer is different."

Google, a division of Alphabet, said its ethicists and engineers considered Lemoine's concerns and found that it wasn't supported by evidence.

"These systems mimic the kind of exchanges found in millions of sentences and can riff any fantastic topic," said a spokesman. "When you ask what an ice cream dinosaur is, you can generate a melting and roaring text."

Nevertheless, this episode is a nasty question about what is considered a sensibility. To raise.

Center for the Future Mind's Schneider is inspiring to AI systems to determine if they envision philosophical riddles such as whether people have a soul that lives beyond death. I suggest asking a question.

Another test, she added, is whether AI or computer chips can one day seamlessly replace parts of the human brain without changing an individual's behavior.

"It's not a matter of Google's decision whether AI is conscious," Schneider said, deeper about what consciousness is and whether machines make it possible. I asked for understanding.

"This is a philosophical question and there is no easy answer."

Go deeper

Replika In CEO Kuyda's view Chatbots do not create their own agenda. And they cannot be considered alive until they are considered alive.

Still, some people come to believe that they are conscious on the other side. Kuyda said he is taking steps to educate users before they get too deep.

"Replika is not a sentient being or treatment specialist," says the FAQ page. "Replika's goal is to generate the most realistic and human-like responses in a conversation. Therefore, Replika can be said to be non-factual."

In hopes of avoiding addictive conversations, Kuyda said Replika measured and optimized customer well-being after chat, not engagement.

If a user believes the AI is genuine, dismissing that belief can lead people to suspect that the company is hiding something. As a result, the CEO said the technology was still in its infancy and told customers that some answers could be meaningless.

Kuyda recently spent 30 minutes with a user who felt his Replika was suffering from trauma, she said.

She told him: " Replikas is just an algorithm, so these things don't happen."
