What we know about the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago
The FBI is executing search warrants at the home of former President Donald Trump in Florida on Monday and took away boxes and papers, two sources told CBS News. confirmed to No electronics were taken, according to sources.
Trump said Monday night that his resort of Mar-a-Lago was being "raided" by his FBI. A source confirmed to CBS News that the investigation is related to a Justice Department investigation prompted by the National Archives earlier this year. The agency said it found 15 boxes of presidential records. At Mar-a-Lago, containing classified material.
One official said some or all of the seized documents contained classified material.
A source in Palm Beach, Fla., close to Trump told CBS News on Monday that the search was "related to the PRA." said. Presidential Records Act. "When did you hear that the raid was done because of the PRA?" asked a source.
The Presidential Records Act of 1978establishes recordkeeping responsibilities for former presidents . It mandates that memos, letters, e-mails, and other documents related to the duties of the President be preserved and submitted to the National Archives upon the termination of his administration.
In February, the National Archives asked the Justice Department to investigate its handling of Mr. Trump's documents. At the time, the National Archives said some of the documents Trump handed over to them had been torn and re-taped.
On Monday, New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman released photos from her forthcoming book. The photo appears to show at least two instances of Trump trying to flush documents down the toilet.
"Never before has a president of the United States done anything like this," Trump said in a statement Monday. "After working with relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate."
Republicanscondemned the search. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has vowed that "we will monitor immediately" if the party wins back the House. Departments should follow the facts and do everything possible. '' He warned, ''Attorney General Garland: Keep your papers and clear your agenda.''
Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement Tuesday, "The nation deserves a thorough and prompt explanation of the causes that led to Monday's events." should have already provided an answer to this question." The American people must do so immediately.
