IllinoisPolice began investigating suspects related to shootings at the Independence Day parade on Monday, killing at least six people and injuring more than 20.
The whereabouts of the suspected shooterwere not immediately apparent as a black-haired white man around the age of 19. Police said he fired from the roof and then fled. Police scanner chatter showed authorities are looking at many places in the surrounding area, a wealthy suburban outpost about 25 miles north of Chicago.
"There are no signs that he has barricades or hostages anywhere," Chris Koveli, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, said at a press conference in the afternoon. "Investigators are working very quickly to identify who this person is and to figure out where he is."
Police recovered the rifle, but identified him. The unknown shooter said he was still armed and considered dangerous.

Governor JB Pritzker said he "made available resources for all states" to support the community, saying state police. Was also at the scene. Chicago Police Department officer. The city said in a statement that 16 people were hospitalized and the investigation was active until around 12:40 pm. CT.
Law enforcement agencies are searching for suspects. Evidence of firearms has been recovered. A large number of law enforcement officers are working to secure the boundaries around downtown Highland Park.
"We are supporting the Highland Park police with shootings in the area of Independence Day Parade Route," the sheriff's office tweeted. "Keep away from the area-allow law enforcement and first responders to do their job."
It was not immediately known how many were shot dead. Two people have been confirmed dead.
The Highland Park Police Department has confirmed that they are responding to a "lively situation" and will soon issue a statement to FoxNews Digital.
Witnesses told Chicago-based WGN-TV News that they heard about 15 ammunition when they grabbed their 4-year-old son and fled the area. According to witnesses, he said the gunman crouched in a "very military style" and fired in an orderly manner.
A video shared with the Citizen app showed that at least one police helicopter was hovering overhead near the parade route.
