On Friday, former US Defense Secretary Jim Mathis insulted Russian President Vladimir Putin and accused the invasion of Ukraine as "incompetent" and "stupid."
In a speech in Seoul, Mathis compared Putin to a kind of paranoid character created by the Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky.
"Putin is a creature that came directly from Dostoevsky. He sleeps angry at night, sleeps at horrible nights, and sleeps at night thinking Russia is surrounded by nightmares," said Mathis.
In his speech, Mathis did not directly address these disagreements. He said that only Trump oversaw non-traditional diplomatic policies that challenged US relations with allies.
When asked about the greatest lessons learned from the Russian war in Ukraine, Mathis replied, "Don't have an incompetent general in charge of your operation."
He also stated that Russia's invasion was "tactically incompetent" and "strategicly stupid."
The country said, "If you support Russia's criminal invasion of Ukraine, you can't do great things." Mattis talked about his tenure under Trump, talking about "noisy times," calling him a "rare leader," but did not directly criticize the former president.
"Democratic is sometimes popular and sometimes breaks tradition," he said. "Testing ideas and everything is sometimes the nature of democracy."

Matisse's speech was given in South Korea, a US ally who felt the impact of Trump's non-traditional foreign policy dramatically. He was never optimistic about the talks, but said his diplomatic efforts were "right."

Conservative Yun, who clearly accepted the United States, said he wanted to make South Korea a "nation of the world." This week, Yun attended the NATO Summit in Madrid. This was the first time a Korean leader attended such a conference.
Mattis praised Yun for attending the NATO Summit, saying: All our best interests.
However, he recently warned against Seoul's voice asking South Korea to acquire its own nuclear weapons.
He said, "We don't need nuclear weapons on the peninsula. As long as there is trust between South Korea and the United States, it is a deterrent," referring to the abbreviation of the Republic of Korea, which is the official name of South Korea.
Opinion surveys consistently show that most Koreans support them. In particular, as North Korea continues to develop its own weapons, the country has acquired its own nuclear weapons.
