Mets hold off Braves after Brett Beatty hits home run in first MLB at-bat

Atlanta — Brett Baty only had to swing 1 to arrive in the major leagues on Wednesday night.

Beatty's first swing in the majors, the product of that swing, is a trust he's a light in the park. It gave me hope that there would be more in this pennant race and beyond.

Baty crushed it as his debut progressed. He became the fifth player in franchise history to hit a home run in his first league at-bat, helping the Mets to his coveted 9–7 victory over the Braves.

Sterling Marte hits his second homer, Francisco Lindor hits another hit the books and led his 14th for the Mets. - Hit attack.

After he lost by one run combined in his first two games of the series, the Mets hit his fourth inning homer Wednesday and snapped the skid to put him in the Braves' record in the NL East. He trailed by 4½ games.

Adam Ottavino hit his three-run homer off Robbie Grossman in the seventh inning, wiping out most of his 6–1 lead for the Mets. Edwin Diaz and Trevor May combined to score the final six outs, but May gave up two runs in the ninth.

Batty, 22, was named second in line to catcher Francisco Alvarez by Triple-A side Syracuse before the game after Eduardo Escobar was placed on injured reserve with a strained left oblique.

Batty, the eighth hitter, came to bat for the first time in his second inning and threw the ball against Jake Odrizzi before Curb jumped on the ball and hit a home run. He joined Benny Ayala, Mike Fitzgerald, Kaz Matsui, and Mike Jacobs as the only Mets to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat.

In the sixth inning, Batty hit a 113 mph shot against lefty Tyler his Matzek, but it led to a fielder's choice groundout. He finished the night 1-4.

Batty, who was the Mets' top pick in the 2019 draft, was just promoted to Syracuse last week. In his 95 games between Double-A Binghamton and Syracuse, he scored a . 315/. 410/.

"[The big leagues] weren't on my mind at all," Batty said before the game. "I was only worried about winning the Syracuse game, but now I'm here to win the New York Mets ball game."

At the plate, Batty made a concerted effort to get the ball in the air more often.

"I've always tried to hit the ball hard across the field," Batty said. "I knew it was going to come quickly, and I've seen a little bit of it this year. But I think I'm just scratching the surface. I feel like I can do a lot more for this organization.

Max Scherzer played 6¹/₃ innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 3 hits, 8 strikeouts and 3 walks for his 199th win of his career. A right-hander, he retired 13 straight hitters before Eddie walked Rosario in the seventh inning to start a rally that gave the Braves a close game.

Play resumed after rain in the third inning and Scherzer returned to the pitch after his 34-minute layoff. Two nights ago Carlos Carrasco returned to the pitch after his 55-minute rain delay and set off with a left diagonal strain.

But Scherzer had no such problem. After walking Grossman, he retired three back-to-back hitters, including Dansby Swanson, whose shot into the center field fence became a sacrifice fly and pulled the Braves to 4-1.Brandon Nimmo hit the fence padding hard and grabbed his right wrist, but remained in the game.

Canha hit an RBI double in his sixth to give the Mets his 5–1 lead after his leadoff single off Jeff McNeil. Odrizzi was removed after allowing 5 earned runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts over 5 innings.

Marte's second homer of the night, Tyler in the seventh, his solo blowup against Mazzek sent the Braves to his 6-1 hole.

The Mets scored an insurance run in his ninth on Pete Alonso's two-run single and Daniel Vogelbach's RBI double. Nemo and Lindor each singled in the inning.
