Minions: The Rise of Guru Makes Boxing Revenue With $ 108.5 Million Debut

FThe family ate bananas for minions at the movie theater this weekend. "Minions: The Rise of Gru" brought an estimated $ 108.5 million in ticket sales from 4,391 screens in North America, Universal Pictures said Sunday. By the end of Monday's July 4th holiday, you could earn over $ 127.9 million.

This movie is a holiday weekend on July 4th, a record previously held by Transformers: The Darkness of the Moon, which earned $ 115.9 million in the first four days of 2011. Will be one of the biggest opening in history. .. Including the international show "Minions: The Rise of Gru" in 61 markets, the total global value will be $ 202.2 million until Sunday.

"This is a great debut," said Jim O, president of Universal's domestic distribution division. "It's been played very widely across North America. All markets are very strong."

This is the "Sing 2", which has earned over $ 406 million since its opening in December. And the latest in a series of successful Universal family releases, including The Bad Guys, which earned over $ 243. One million. "Minions: The Rise of Gru" serves as further evidence that family spectators are happy to return to the cinema.

"The family feels very comfortable taking all their children to the theater," Orr said. "These results speak for themselves."

"Minions 2" attracted all age groups to the theater, including very young people. According to a PostTrak survey, 12% were under the age of 10.

"For months, the idea was that the family audience wouldn't return to the theater. Paul Delgarabedian, Senior Media Analyst at Comscore, said:

The spin-off of the popular "Despicable Me" series was delayedtwo years due to the pandemic. The sequel to the 2015 movie "Minions" was originally scheduled for release in July 2020. While many other animated family movies have opted for streaming or hybrid releases, "minions" like "Top Gun: Maverick" stay on course and have an ideal time to be released only in theaters. I waited. And like the "top gun", it seemed worth the wait.

"This was an event. It was a holiday weekend. The release date was perfect and the marketing was accurate," said Delgarabedian. "And everyone knew that this would only happen in the theater."

The voice performer featured Steve Karel and his role as a guru, Alan Arkin, Michelle Yo and Julie Andrews as Guru's mother will be replayed. Although critics were positively mixed (currently 72% of rotten tomatoes), the audience was more enthusiastic and gave the A Cinema Score to the story of Gru's origin.

Universal and Illumination has been a huge success in five "Despicable Me" movies and spin-offs dating back to 2010, earning over $ 3.7 billion in box offices around the world.

Second place is "Top Gun: Maverick", which has continued to be distributed for 6 weeks, adding an additional $ 25.5 million to the total, and has already exceeded $ 1 billion. Paramount Pictures movies are still showing in 3,843 locations.

Warner Brothers' Elvis came in third, down just 39% on their second weekend at the theater. By Sunday, Baz Luhrmann's film had an estimated $ 19 million in revenue, bringing the national total to $ 67.3 million.

4th and 5th place are also universal titles, "Jurassic World: Dominion" has won an additional $ 15.7 million, and the horror movie "The Black Phone" has added $ 12.3 million by Sunday.

Meanwhile, Disney's "Light Year" fell further on the third weekend for an estimated $ 6.5 million. By Monday, that total should increase to $ 8.1 million and cumulative revenue should be $ 106.9 million.

Breaker Street released "Malcolm's List" on 1,384 screens in the US and Canada this weekend. The Regency Manners comedy starringFreida Pinto and Zawe Ashtonas friends who want to return to a nifty single. The studio estimates that the movie will be $ 851,853 by the end of Sunday and over $ 1 million by the end of Monday.

The audience is catching up with A24's "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and can be rented on demand, but an estimated $ 552,000 has been added from the 607 screen. The studio's new title, "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On," will be expanded to 22 screens this weekend and is expected to generate approximately $ 308,000 by the end of Monday.

According to Comscore, weekends as a whole will fall as one of the biggest in the pandemic era. And that momentum is expected to continue with the release of Marvel's "Tall: Love and Thunder" next week.

Estimated ticket sales from Friday to Sunday at theaters in the US and Canada, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be announced on Tuesday.
