Opinion: Laverne Cox Barbie is a breakthrough

(CNN)At the age of 10, I regularly played with a handful of Barbie dolls and a little neonPink and turquoise plastic doll shop. I loved them, but I had to get some creative licenses to match my pretending fantasy world with my up-and-coming self-esteem.

Barbie's hair was cut off, so it became a small spike-shaped proto. Now-the embankment dressed Ken and smashed them, paired two Barbies as a couple, and filled Matel's children's dolls as relatives. Ken was left behind, exposed to undressed elements, and forced to mow the lawn and look for signs of illegal intrusion into the garage.

I didn't know I was weird yet, and I didn't have any words to explain why I was different or why I liked male Barbie much more than female Barbie. Still I was able to express my future self through play.

The doll is not for me, but for a girly girl, even though I tried to ring a very unrealistic doll with a shoehorn and shape the role I wanted them to play more. I noticed that it was designed for. I was too butch, too fat, too brunette and too strange for Barbie. As I grew up, I also noticed that girls were assigned other gender roles. Some of them forced me to fight. Discussed at a conference by men and treated as a second-class citizen because of being an LGBTQ +, I feel that it doesn't deserve great things in life. From that time on, I gave up buying and playing dolls.

But the recent release of the famous actress and activist Laburn Cox'sfirst transgender BarbieMatel has brought me to life.
Dolls designed by Matel's lead designerStrange Carlyle Nuera, named Cox Doll"4 times Emmy-Nominated" The actress, Emmy Award-winning producer, and the first transgender woman to play a leading role in a screened television show, Raburn Cox, uses her voice to go beyond social expectations and become more authentic. Amplifies the message of living a life of. "

The Cox doll is tall, proud, and" a bright red tulle gown gracefully covered in a dazzling silver metal body suit. " I am wearing the "original design of the triple threat" that is characterized by. Her hair is described as "washed out by the glamorous Hollywood waves."

The new Barbie is part of Matel'sBarbie Signature Collection. This club includes jewels such as David Bowie Barbie, 1967 Francy, and Barbie Looks Doll. brown. "

The world may be the fire of a dump star, but the Laburn Cox Barbie doll gives me hope. Like me 25 years ago, in a toy store or online doll You may have a small child you come across and feel seen. They may be able to feel a connection with something outside of them for the first time-the beginning of a sense of community, safety and affirmation. Upset.

When I ordered my Laverne CoxBarbie online, tears ran down my face.

Not only did I not feel connected to the doll for 25 years?

I also remember working with Cox when communicating for a small, now abolished LGBTQ advocacy group in New York. She was a bus with us.protested at the Albany CapitolShe was at the LGBT Center's dingy dark basement panel in West Village, New York City, with an audience of just a handful of people {63 I remember when I talked about

how far she came and how the society is candid and political and a black trance woman licensed by a toy company. It's really amazing to see if it's embraced. This groundbreaking moment provides LGBTQ +, especially the trance people, a little rest from the increasingly hostile environment in American public life.

LGBTQ +, especially living in an era when trance rights are trapped in the right-wing cultural war and therainbow scare scapegoating trapThere are more than 200 anti-LGBTQ + bills Introducedin the congress ofstate lin 2022, primarily targeting Transkids and their access to healthcare and sports. v. In consent to the majority of cases that defeated Wade, Supreme Court JusticeClarence ThomasTwo cases at the heart of LGBTQ + rights in this countryLawrence v. TexasandOberge fellv. Hodges(guaranteeing equal rights to sex and marriage under agreement),c, afteroverthrows Roe
, Need to rethink. ”Not to mention many others, when so many real trance and quier people are under attack, it may feel trivial to gather around inanimate toys. Maybe it's more than just a child's play. The children of Trance were victims of the Cultural War, andforced them into the role ofin the wedge problemto elect the Ringwing. Legislators and parents are attacking the school curriculum, as are the so-called "Don't say gay" bills in Florida and imitation bills across the country. Bookscontaining LGBTQ + characters or content are prohibited. In Disney Pixar's new "Buzz Light Year" movie, there is even a backlash against thelesbian kiss. In this environment, movements like the deployment of the first transgender Barbie's Matel will help counter Vitriol.

Barbie Tribute Collection Laburn Cox Doll is priced at $ 40. However, in reality, it is not possible to put a price tag on an inclusive expression. It's worth it if the Laverne Cox doll makes a trance or even a strange child feel a little lonely and a little scared.

When I received the Laverne Cox Barbie, my 5-year-old kid wanted to open the box and play, but said this was one of the dolls I kept myself. I did. The neon barbie house may be on fire, but the Laburncox doll, and along with it, the trance and quier people survive.
