Leave it to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to devote an episode to a support group for super-powered individuals run by the government assassin turned giant lizard creature turned guru Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth). That’s what Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) had to deal with this week in her ongoing ordeals as She-Hulk, and we got to meet a whole lot of surprising Marvel characters as a result. SPOILERS ahead for those of you who love seeing D-list Marvel characters make the jump into live-action!
If you’ve already seen the episode, then you know who shows up in Episode 7, “The Retreat.” Or, well, it’s more likely that you saw all these guys and have a whole lot of questions about who they are and if they are real Marvel characters. Of course they’re real Marvel characters! The comics have a massive bizarre streak that She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is having a blast exploiting.
So, who’s who in Abomination’s — I mean Emil Blonsky’s — support group? Let’s find out together!
El Aguila
Who is El Aguila? In the comics, El Aguila is a Spanish swordsman named Alejandro Montoya who relocated to New York City in to fight crime. His most frequent partners — well, frenemies — are Luke Cage and Iron Fist. And as seen in the episode, he possesses the ability to create bioelectric shocks, which he channels through his sword. In the comics, this is actually El Aguila’s mutant power.
Who plays El Aguila? Joseph Castillo-Midyett plays El Aguila on She-Hulk. He’s had guest appearances on The Equalizer, Fear the Walking Dead, Queen of the South, New Amsterdam, FBI, and Elementary. He even appeared on Netflix’s Jessica Jones series in Season 2.
Man-Bull
Who is Man-Bull? In the comics, Man-Bull initially worked as a henchman for a… time-traveling robot… who injected him with a bunch of science, thus creating the Man-Bull. He really should’ve seen this coming, too, because his name is William Taurens. Get it, Taurus? If you debut in a Marvel comic with a distinctive surname like that, you gotta be prepared to turn into the personification of it. He frequently clashed with Daredevil and, ironically enough, teamed up with the criminal Matador (who is not El Aguila).
Who plays Man-Bull? Nathan Hurd plays Man-Bull on She-Hulk. Hurd has a previous Marvel credit from playing the Monk on FX’s Legion. Most recently he’s appeared on episodes of Magnum P.I. and Abbott Elementary.
Saracen
Who is Saracen? There are actually two different characters named Saracen in the comics. One of them, whose alter-ego is Muzzafar Lambert, is an assassin who had dangerous run-ins with Punisher. He didn’t appear in many comics, but he had a Marvel Universe Series II trading card, which made him seem more consequential than he ever was. This Saracen, however, believes he’s a vampire. That means he’s inspired by the other, lesser-known Saracen, an ancient vampire who caused some trouble for Blade in a few issues back in 1999.
Who plays Saracen? Terrence Clowe plays Saracen on She-Hulk. Clowe recently appeared on Hulu’s Mike and Dopesick, Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial, and Starz’s Hightown. His previous Marvel credit: voicing the character Flamingeaux on the Marvel scripted podcast Wolverine: The Lost Trail.
Porcupine
Who is Porcupine? In the comics, Porcupine is a moniker that a number of low-level crooks have gone by over the years. Alexander Gentry was the first, and he was a weapons designer who designed a porcupine-inspired battlesuit. He used that suit to fight Ant-Man and the Wasp, and later tangoed with Captain America, Iron Man, and plenty of other heroes.
Who plays Porcupine? Jordan Aaron Ford plays Porcupine on She-Hulk. Ford is an actor based in Atlanta, and She-Hulk is not only his first Marvel credit, but his first IMDb credit too. What a start to a career!
Wrecker
Who is Wrecker? Of all the weirdos in Blonsky’s support group, Wrecker is by far the most well-known of the bunch in the comics. Like we saw previously on She-Hulk, he’s the leader of the Wrecking Crew and gets his powers from a crowbar that’s supercharged with Asgardian magic. Him and the Wrecking Crew are actually a serious threat in the comics. They nearly killed Hercules once!
Who plays Wrecker? Nick Gomez plays Wrecker on She-Hulk. He previously had recurring roles on Sundance’s The Red Road, Facebook’s Wendy, HBO’s Treme, and Prime Video’s Bosch.
Now the real question is, will Jen’s new support group buds back her up in her eventual showdown with whoever the hell Hulk King is? We’ll find out in the final two episodes of the season!
