Swarm is one of those shows that demands viewers ask questions. Some of those questions are easy to answer, like is Ni’Jah supposed to be a Beyoncè stand-in? (Yes) Was that Billie Eilish? (Also yes) Others are far more complicated, like why did Dre (Dominique Fishback) kill so many people? And “What the hell did I just watch?”
But if you’ve finished Swarm, we’re guessing that you have one question that’s more important than the rest: Is there going to be a Swarm Season 2? Here’s everything we currently know about Swarm‘s future on Amazon Prime Video.
Will There Be Season 2 of Swarm?
Amazon has yet to announce whether or not Donald Glover and Janine Nabers‘ horror drama will be getting a Season 2. But there are a few reasons to hope for more episodes.
The first has to do with how this drama has been marketed. In all of the official press releases as well as on the series’ IMDB page, Swarm has been described as a TV series instead of a miniseries. That implies Glover and Nabers may have some sort of plan for additional seasons. There’s also reason to believe Amazon would be interested in continuing this show. The original is currently No. 1 on Amazon in the United States, based on whatever internal metrics the streamer has. That’s impressive considering that the much-hyped and largely discussed Daisy Jones and the Six premiered earlier this month. Swarm has also inspired a great deal of discussion on social media, proving that fans are watching and responding to it.
Then there’s the Glover deal. In February of 2021, it was announced that Donald and Stephen Glover signed an overall deal with Amazon, which included Swarm — titled Hive at the time. This deal came about three years after the Glover brothers, Rihanna, and director Hiro Murai released their musical film Guava Island via Amazon. Glover is also expected to release his Mr. and Mrs. Smith comedy based on the movie of the same name later this year. Months after the streaming service signed its deal with Glover, it also signed a deal with Nabers. Under this deal, Nabers is expected to release a tech drama titled Syd, which, according to Deadline, will follow “a powerful Black tech CEO who wakes up one morning to discover that a mysterious entity has hacked its way into his life.” This is all to say Amazon has a vested interest in both of Swarm‘s co-creators. Chances are high it’s going to want more seasons of a popular show from these collaborators.
What Could Happen in Season 2 of Swarm?
Seriously, don’t keep reading if you don’t want spoilers. If you’ve seen even a minute of this horror dramedy, you know it’s a twisted ride.
After murdering so many people, Season 1 of Swarm ended with Dre (Dominique Fishback) meeting her idol — the one and only Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown). After Dre crashed her show and walked onstage, Ni’Jah proved that she was the goddess Dre expected her to be. Instead of asking security to take her away, Ni’Jah told Dre to sing and actually brought her back to her car after the show. Season 1 ended with Dre curling up against Ni’Jah. But that doesn’t mean this story has a happy ending for our murder-happy antihero.
If there’s a Season 2, it will likely revolve around Dre facing the consequences for the 11 people she murdered. After all, she still has goddess-in-her-own-right Detective Loretta Greene (Heather Simms) hot on her trail. It’s also unclear if Ni’Jah knows whether or not Dre was the person who bit her face, so that will likely be revealed. But those loose ends seem a bit too boring for Glover and Nabers’ work. A full season from the perspective of Ni’Jah with another surprise standalone episode seems more their speed.
