‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 Episode 6 Preview Teases An EMT Helicopter and More Tears

Yellowstone‘s Season 5, Episode 6 preview has arrived. And as the great John Dutton once said, “Yeehaw!”

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Season 5, Episode 5, “Watch ‘Em Ride Away,” ended with Summer (Piper Perabo) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) literally watching the boys, Beth (Kelly Reilly), Teeter (Jennifer Landon), and Clara (Lilli Kay) ride away on a crucial quest to herd and brand their cattle. Per Governor Dutton (Kevin Costner), the group plans to ride alongside Mount Chisholm, push the cattle down to Louis Creek, and hold them in the meadow overnight. “If we’re lucky we’ll get them all in one drive,” he said, reminding everyone that there’s no way to carry a camp, so it’s “empty stomachs and cold backs for a couple days.”

The episode opened with a flashback of young JD and his crew setting out on a similar journey back in the day, before hopping back to present-day, where several serious conversations — and even a fist fight (!) — unfolded at the ranch.

We’ll have to wait until Sunday to see how the ambitious trek goes for John, Kacey (Luke Grimes), Beth, Rip (Cole Hauser), and the rest of the crew. But until then, let’s pour over the Paramount Network’s latest preview trailer. We’re here to break down Yellowstone’s Episode 6 the preview frame by frame, but as a reminder, there will be spoilers ahead!

What’s In The Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 6 Preview?

Next time on Yellowstone, we’ll see some quality father and son time between John and Kayce. The preview opens with the two men on horseback, and John telling Kayce, “You can sell it, son. You could bottle it up and sell it.”

We see Beth and Rip riding horses through the forest, then sitting down together for a serious talk. “I could live here and never see another person my whole life except you,” Beth tells him. Rip stares back at her looking straight-up smitten.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Summer is taking Beth’s Episode 5 advice and exploring the land. She walks around the Dutton cemetery and marvels, “This family’s been here that long…” Turns out, she’s not alone. Monica’s with her, and she chimes in to explain, “When I say we give everything to this land…I do mean everything.”

The next few shots are free from dialogue, but they offer a taste of the concerning chaos still to come. We see people on horseback herding cattle, an EMT Flight helicopter landing in a field, and John riding alone. Next thing we know, he’s seated, hugging someone with curly dark hair who appears to be crying. HMM…

We catch a glimpse of John’s assistant Clara on horseback. And Beth rides up to John, which leads him to ask, “What happened?” Beth removes her hat, looks down at him, and the last thing we see is a shot of John’s concerned face.

Where Should I Pause The Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 6 Preview?

As usual, it’s hard to infer too many specifics from the Season 5, Episode 6 preview. But here are several moments worthy of some extra thought.

  • John and Kayce’s future: It looks like John is giving Kayce some fatherly advice in Episode 6, and we can’t wait to see more. Ever since Kayce saw “the end” of him and Monica in his vision, he’s been especially careful when making decisions. After he and Monica lost the baby, he resigned from his role as Livestock Commissioner. But in Episode 5, Monica told him they need to move on and he shouldn’t quit his job, because it’s not what made their son die. She encouraged Kayce to join his dad on the cattle branding journey, so it feels like this could be a crucial bonding experience for the Dutton boys.
  • Beth and Rip’s relationship: Season 5 continues to shine a spotlight on Beth and Rip’s love, while repeatedly digging up their complex past. It’s clear that Beth feels sick with guilt for the way she treated Rip when they were teenagers, and the fact that she put on her hat, mounted a horse, and accompanied Rip on this days long ride is a huge gesture on her part. The two seem more madly in love than ever before this season, but we can’t help but wonder if trouble lies ahead.
  • Summer and Monica’s bonding sesh: Since Summer has her house arrest ankle bracelet on and Monica is waiting for her fellas to return, it looks like the two will be having Girl Time at the ranch. We saw Monica get real with Summer as the group rode away and they chatted in the cemetery, so we’re eager to see what else they get up to while everyone’s gone. If Summer is seeking to understand the meaning behind the Dutton land and way of life, Monica seems like the perfect person to enlighten her.
  • The EMT helicopter: Truly so many things can go wrong with so many different people that we can’t even begin to guess what this is about. But best believe we’re worried!
  • Who’s crying in John’s arms?: Does this scene have to do with the EMT helicopter? Or John asking Beth, “What happened?” John’s cradling this person’s head, so their identity isn’t quite clear, but based on the hair, perhaps it’s Tate or Carter?
  • Clara is cool as hell: We’ve loved getting to see more of John’s Season 5 assistant, Clara, these past few episodes. And the fact that she’s a pro at riding a horse and seamlessly fits into John’s world, both in and outside of the office, is delightful. It’s nice getting to see John’s softer side in interactions with Clara. And she continues to surprise, so we can’t wait to see what’s in store for her in Episode 6.
