Chapter 2: New in 2020

What's changed due to COVID-19?

When decisions about the HSC going ahead in 2020 were made, the health and safety of students and all others involved in the exam process was a key consideration. Making the process as fair as possible was also essential.

Some components of the 2020 HSC exam needed to be cancelled or altered.

Major works

Due to disruptions associated with COVID-19, the hand-in dates for the Visual Arts Body of Work and the Major Projects in the Technology courses have been extended. See key dates for details. These will now be marked by your teacher.

For English Extension 2, it was decided that Multimedia – Short Film will not be examined. Students in Multimedia – Short Film will instead submit their major work in hard copy.

The written exams start on October 20.

VET work placements

If you were unable to complete your work placement due to the COVID-19 outbreak you will still be eligible for the Preliminary or HSC credit units.

Disability provisions

If you are applying for disability provisions, you have more time to provide evidence to support the application.

Minimum standard

If you are yet to meet the HSC minimum standard you can attempt each test up to six times in 2020. You can also take the tests once you have left school.

Your HSC means you've met the standard

As a Year 12 student in 2020, you will be the first graduates to receive an HSC which includes a specific literacy and numeracy requirement.

To demonstrate that you have these literacy and numeracy skills, you were asked to complete short online tests in reading, writing and numeracy in Years 10, 11 or 12, unless you had already achieved Band 8 or above in the 2017 Year 9 NAPLAN tests.

If you haven't taken the online tests yet, don't worry. There is still time.

Year 12 students can attempt each test up to six times in 2020. This is to make sure all students have a fair and reasonable opportunity to sit the tests.

You have until November 30 to pass each test and receive your HSC credential on results day.

Only students who meet the HSC minimum standard will receive their HSC credential.

Some students studying Life Skills courses may be exempt from meeting the minimum standard to receive their HSC credential. Talk to your school if you have questions about the minimum standard tests.

What to expect if you're doing a new Maths course

2020 is the first year the new Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 courses will be examined in the HSC.
