10 hurt as BCL factions clash in Pabna

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League in Pabna last night.

The clash broke out in Pabna city's Masumbazar area over a previous dispute. Most of the injured suffered bullet injuries, and one was admitted in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition, reports our Pabna correspondent quoting police.

The clash broke out between the supporters of BCL leader Ifte Arafat Sifat, former organising secretary of Pabna municipal unit BCL, and the supporters of Mehedi Hasan, vice president of Pabna district unit BCL, around 10:30pm, said Officer-in-Charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station Kripa Shindhu Bala.

The OC said there was longstanding enmity between Sifat and Mehedi over establishing supremacy in Masumabazar area. Recently both groups locked in a clash at Pabna Mohila College area. A clash broke out last night when supporters of Sifat suddenly attacked the men of Mehedi, the OC added.

Both Mehedi and Sifat blamed each other for the attack.

A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the fighting. Additional police were deployed in the area, the OC said.

President of Pabna district unit BCL, Mizanur Rahman Sabuj, said both Sifat and Mehedi has long standing enmity.

"We attempted to solve their internal problems several times but failed," he added.
