A 57-year-old man was on Monday denied bail on a rape charge.

Gary Talbot Cooper appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain accused of the rape of a 21-year-old woman on January 14.

Cooper was not required to enter a plea to the charge and bail was denied because the magistrate lacks the jurisdiction to consider bail for the offense.

However, Cooper can seek bail in the Supreme Court.

Cooper is next due to appear before Swain in April when it is expected that his case will be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment.
