Recent University grad murdered

The young man whose body was found in a garbage bag in the back trunk of a Honda Fit in Centreville yesterday was identified by his relatives as Omar Davis Jr., who grew up in Kemp Road and graduated from Central State University with a 4.0 in Ohio in May.

Davis had beaten the odds after watching his father shot to death at their home in 2013.

At the scene in Centreville yesterday, police said the victim had wounds to his head, face and chest.

The body was in the early stages of decomposition, according to Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson, the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department.

Johnson said police received a report around 5 p.m. about a suspicious car that was parked in the back of a food store on Sixth Terrace Avenue. The officers went to investigate and noticed that a body was inside the trunk.

There has been an outpouring of grief and expressions of shock, anger and disbelief on social media over Davis’ murder.

In 2018, he was awarded a scholarship through the Ministry of Education Public School Scholars Programme and graduated with a double degree in Accounting and Finance.

In a speech he gave as an honoree in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Honours Day Convocation that year, Davis, who was valedictorian at C. I. Gibson Secondary School and had a passion for numbers, said after watching his father take his last breath on June 1, 2013, he often thought of dropping out of school or doing drugs to calm his nerves.

But he said his father’s voice kept playing in his head” “Short man, never be like me when you grow up.”

“These words motivated me to be strong for my mommy and my brother,” he said, “to strive for excellence and do my best.”

Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander said today five people are in custody in relation to the latest murder — the 88th for the year in The Bahamas.
