New Beginnings Still Has Old Challenges

The New Beginnings Youth Development Centre changed its name in May of 2022 from the Princess Royal Youth Hostel. Along with the name change came a new charter that included upgrades to the infrastructure and the quality of education and care that is offered to the youths who reside there.  In fact, the facility transitioned from being a place of punishment to being a residential care facility.  Thirteen months later, there are some lingering challenges that the institution faces. Minister of Human Development, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia shared with News Five that the issues have to do with a few of the staff.

“We are still having some challenges there in terms of the counselors, in terms of the social workers, it is still a work in progress even though we, you know, we did the name change and we did a lot of upgrading to the physical infrastructure. We did a lot of upgrading to the teaching that is going on with the children. All of them were enrolled either in school physically or virtually. So we’ve done a lot, but we are still having some challenges there and then of course, we have the statutory bodies that work with us – the National Council on Aging, the National Women’s Commission and the National Commission for Families and Children.”
