Alberta Police Observers Investigate After Man and Woman Shot by RCMP Near Smoky Lake

Alberta Police Observatory says it is conducting an investigation after a woman and a man were shot dead by RCMP officers northeast of Edmonton.

According to the Alberta Critical Incident Response Team, RCMP officials responded to a call on Sunday regarding a vehicle in Alberta's Smoky Lake area.

ASIRT said police found the vehicle the next morning and tried to stop it before it drove away.

Police then used a tire deflation device before the occupants inside the vehicle opened fire, officials said.

It says that an armed man and a woman went to a gas station and stole a truck.

According to ASIRT, police officers later found an abandoned truck in a rural area and sent police dogs and other search parties to find the two of them.

Police said they found the man in the field about two hours later and opened fire.

Police later found a man and a woman injured, according to ASIRT.

The man was airlifted to hospital and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
