Brazil and France the class of Danone Nations Cup

BARCELONA, Spain — Brazil put on a show at the Danone Nations Cup and won the boys’ 2018 tournament in style.

Brazil overran Hungry 3-0 in the final showing the flare and class expected from a Brazilian national team.

Brazil won all six games they played in the tournament, including a thrilling semifinal against France on Friday at the Salou Soccer Sports Complex.

The semifinal was worthy of the final itself and considered one of the best games of the tournament. Brazil managed to pull out a 1-0 victory relegating France to the third-place game, which they won 1-0 against Bulgaria.

On the girls’ side, France was the class of the 2018 field and rolled to a 3-0 win against Italy in the final.

France defeated Canada twice en route to the semifinal, winning the two legs of the double round-robin format 3-0 and 1-0.

The French team is made up of members of the Olympic Lyonnais academy, which is the best women’s team in the world.

In the 2019 tournament, featuring players from 10-12 years of age, the host Spain defeated France 2-1 in the girls final, while Mexico won in a penalty shootout against Spain after finishing in a 1-1 tie.

Spain came inches from winning the game five minutes from the end when a ball slowly rolling towards the net was cleared off the goal line.

Replays seemed to indicate the ball had just crossed the line, but VAR is not being used in the tournament.
