Havana — Cuban General Luis Alberto Rodriguez Lopez-Kaleha, one of the country's most powerful men died of a heart attack on Friday, state media reported.

Lopez-Calleja, 62, was once married to Deborah, the daughter of former Cuban leader Raul Castro. He was a key member of the Cuban Politburo, the highest decision-making body of the ruling Communist Party.

A short article in the Communist newspaper, Grandma, lamented Lopez Kaleha's death and praised his "great record of service to his homeland and the Cuban Revolution."

He was Raul Castro's best friend and head of GAESA, a conglomerate of military-owned companies that manage vast areas of the Cuban economy.

2020 US President Donald Trump has added Lopez Kaleja to the list of "Specially Designated Citizens and Blocked Persons." This is a US blacklist that bans US people or businesses from doing business with him and has blocked his assets. (Report by Dave Sherwood; edited by Angus MacSwan)
