Elks lose best lineman in game in Ottawa on Friday

The Edmonton Elks are looking to break their three-game losing streak against the Ottawa Redblacks in the US capital on Friday. Football teams have to deal with missing the services of even the best offensive linemen.

Center David Beard was ruled out of Friday's contest after Elk's injury report indicated he was ill.

Big news today, but not good news. OL David Beard will be in action in Ottawa on Friday. He thinks either Marc Corte or Thomas-Jacques Crudilla will take over at center. #Elks #CFL pic.twitter.com/YW4b828xgK

Beard will be able to practice Tuesday and the first 9 of the season played the match. Either Mark Korte or Tomas Jack-Kurdyla will take his Beard spot at center.

Whoever the center is will snap the ball to quarterback Taylor Cornelius, who will make his fifth straight start of the season in Ottawa on Friday night.

Over the past three games, Cornelius averaged 221 passing yards, but had a staggering 14 sacks. Elks head coach Chris Jones is overall happy with Cornelius, but his interception late in the fourth quarter in last week's 34-23 loss to the Riders needs to improve his decision-making.

"He gets a little stuck at times. He has the ability to loosen the ball and run with it," Jones said. "If you're a mess in this league and you have a good defensive coordinator and defensive personnel...

" If you need to move to give us yards, do it. He ran quite aggressively in the first half, but was a little more cautious in the second half towards takeoff, and the defense tried to protect him."
