A 47-year-old man has been charged with a string of offences more than a year after he was accused of leading a police chase through Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

According to Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, on Oct. 12, 2021 police received a report of a person driving erratically east down Highway One entering Abbotsford.

Police located the suspect vehicle but were unable to get the driver to stop. A police helicopter was dispatched to track the vehicle, and police cruisers backed off.

“During the next ninety minutes, the vehicle was observed running numerous stop signs, passing cars unsafely and, forcing oncoming vehicle traffic onto the shoulder of the road, while driving at excessive speeds,” Walker said.

The vehicle eventually stopped in the Chilliwack area and the suspect was arrested. Walker said that police officers found fentanyl and methamphetamine in the vehicle.

On Tuesday, Jason Himpfen was charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Three months before the incident Abbotsford police issued a public warning asking any one who knew Himpfen to keep away from him as he was considered to pose a significant risk to public safety and was involved in an ongoing gang conflict.

In 2016, Himpfen was charged in the 2010 shooting death of 22-year-old Mandy Johnson in Abbotsford and the attempted murder of her boyfriend. He was acquitted in 2018.
