Hamilton Trustees Approve Various Road Safety Initiatives

Automated speed cameras will be installed on Hamilton's busiest downtown streets.

The Public Works Board on Wednesday approved plans for his two cameras to rotate at his four locations on Main Street and King Street.

Cameras monitor Main Street from Dundarn Street to Queen Street, Gage Avenue to King Street, King Street from Gage Avenue to Rottridge Street, Rock Street to Dundern Street.

"Location is strategic It's well thought out and certainly addresses some public safety concerns," said Ward 2 Coun. Jason Farr.

Cameras is the latest initiative along Main Street and King Street, which has been plagued with multiple pedestrian fatalities since early 2022.

Also City Council Lawmakers recently voted to reduce the number of live traffic lanes on Main Street from five to four.

Camera was one of several road safety initiatives the commission dealt with on Wednesday.

Motion by Ward 3 Coun. Nrinder Nann has asked staff to lower the speed limit to her 30 km/h at her Wentworth Street North near Cathy Wever Elementary School and investigate other safety improvements.

Nan said a child was hit by her pickup truck at the location on June 17 and was seriously injured.
