Tegucigalpa-According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Honduras, Honduras is considering returning the Israeli embassy to Tel Aviv a year after moving to Jerusalem.
Former President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernandez, a conservative who regarded himself as a close ally of Washington, moved the Honduras embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in 2021.
The United States moved its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, overturning decades of US policy under then-President Donald Trump.
Hernandez was handed over to the United States earlier this year on suspicion of drug trafficking.
His successor, the left-wing Shiomaracastro, took office in January.
"The issue of relocating the embassy to Tel Aviv has already been discussed with the President (Castro), not only maintaining a balanced relationship with other Arab countries and Israel, but also for her. It's an interesting topic, "Honduras Foreign Minister Enrique Reina said in a statement.
Israel, which annexed the eastern part of Jerusalem after occupying Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East War, considers the entire Jerusalem as the capital, but most countries consider East Jerusalem as the occupied territory. .. Only the United States, Honduras, Guatemala and Kosovo have embassies in Jerusalem. Other countries have them in Tel Aviv.
Reina discussed the issue at a meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Mariki in Bogotá on Sunday and attended the inauguration of Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
