{ BEIRUT (AP) — At least nine people were killed and dozens injured in a rocket attack on a crowded market in a town held by Turkish-backed opposition fighters in northern Syria on Friday.

Attacks on the town of Al-Bab have killed at least 11 Syrian soldiers and US-backed Kurdish fighters in Turkish airstrikes, the opposition War Observatory and Paramedics Group reported. It happened a few days later. The opposition war watchdog, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said it was in retaliation for Turkish airstrikes and blamed Syrian government forces for the shelling.

The Observatory said at least 10 people were killed and more than 30 injured in the attack.

The opposition Syrian Civil Defense Forces, also known as the White Helmets, had a low death toll. Nine people, including children, were killed and 28 injured. Paramedics said their members evacuated some of the wounded and dead.

Disparities in casualty figures in the immediate aftermath of the attacks are not uncommon in Syria.

Turkey has launched her three major cross-border operations into Syria since 2016 and controls several territories in the north.

Fighting has waned in recent years, but shelling and airstrikes are common in northern Syria, home to the country's last major rebel group.

Syria's conflict, which began in March 2011, has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half of its pre-war population of 23 million.

President Bashar Assad's forces now control much of Syria with the help of allies Russia and Iran.
