“There were rumours they were having an affair about a year ago,” a source spills to PEOPLE. “A lot of people believed there might have been some truth to it, because you can see there’s a mutual affection there. But everyone ultimately chalked it up to friendship because they always said they were both happily married.”

An insider tells Page Six that their dalliance began in March when they were training for the New York City Half Marathon.

One staff member went on to add that the pair tried to keep their burgeoning romance a secret.

“They have a very cozy relationship on air, but that is what is expected. But they were very careful behind the scenes to keep their affair secret. The producers at GMA are shocked to hear they are having an affair.”

New photos published by the Daily Mail show Robach, 49, and Holmes, 45, holding hands and cozying up to one another out in public. In one snap, Holmes playfully grabs Robach’s backside as she leans into a car.

“Everyone knows that Amy and T.J. have been close friends for a long time now, running together and even socializing as a foursome with each other’s spouses,” a source says.

Insiders went on to tell the Daily Mail that Robach ditched her hubby, Melrose Place star Andrew Shue, in August, with Holmes leaving his spouse, attorney Marilee Fiebig, the same month.

On social media, fans cracked jokes as news about the alleged affair made the rounds on Twitter.

“Apparently Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes started having an affair while they were training for the NYC Marathon, proving my long-held belief that literally nothing good comes from being a runner,” one person quipped.

“The P.I. that was tailing T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach earned every damn dime,” a second teased.

“I’ll be collecting my $100 bet on this ’cause anyone who watched GMA3 could tell that T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach’s chemistry was more than just on set,” wrote another. “I am not surprised AT ALL!!!”

After Robach and Holmes deactivated their Instagram accounts, followers of the drama went through old interviews and social media posts looking for clues to when their relationship turned from platonic to romantic.

In a chat with PEOPLE, Robach said the two had instant chemistry after Holmes started at the broadcast in 2014.

“(They) said, ‘Hey, we want to bring on a co-anchor. What do you think of T.J. Holmes?’ And I almost fell out of my chair,” she said.

“My God. You couldn’t have picked a better person to ask me what I thought of, because we’ve been trying to figure out a way to work together for literally the last five years.”

Robach went on to add that they had a sibling-like relationship. “We just can finish each other’s sentences. We get along so well. It’s so wonderful to have, again, it’s that trust, and you don’t always have that on the set. But I know no matter what I do or say, he’s got my back and vice versa, and that’s everything.”

She added that their significant others were comfortable around each other.

“We’ve gone on tons of double dates with our spouses and my daughters babysit his daughters,” she said.

Meanwhile, a post from Holmes in which he paid tribute to his wife on their 10-year anniversary went viral.

“10 years ago, Marilee Fiebig married me,” Holmes captioned throwback wedding photos from their big day, per Page Six. “And despite my best efforts, she remained married to me the past 10 years.

T.J. Holmes joked about giving wife ‘reasons’ to leave on their 10-year anniversary.

“That’s not hyperbole. I’m not being dramatic,” he continued. “I gave her plenty of reasons, excuses, and opportunities to walk her fine ass out the doooooooor.”

But as news of the romance spread, an insider speaking to PEOPLE defended the couple saying they were both single when they embarked on a new relationship.

“This was two consenting adults who were each separated. They both broke up with their spouses in August within weeks of each other. The relationship didn’t start until after that,” the source says.

“She’s got nothing to hide. They were both separated so they felt very comfortable dating in the open after that. Their spouses had moved out, even! So they were not hiding anything.”
