Masks to be mandatory indoors in T.M.R. as of July 27

In Westmount, Mayor Christina Smith has said the municipality “will be making the wearing of masks mandatory in indoor public spaces.”

“While we are encouraging all residents to start wearing masks now in public indoor spaces, we are working with Montreal on the passage of our by-law in the hope that municipalities across Montreal will agree on a common by-law,” she said in a July 8 message.

Smith said Westmount’s legal department is consulting with colleagues in Montreal and other municipalities. A uniform policy makes sense, she said, since Montreal’s police officers will be responsible for enforcing the bylaw and “it would not be helpful to have different rules as you cross the border from one municipality to another.”

Face masks became mandatory on Friday in all commercial outlets in the Montérégie town of St-Chrysostome following a house party in June linked to a COVID-19 outbreak in the region.

The wearing of masks will become mandatory in enclosed indoor public spaces in the Town of Mount Royal as of July 27. The decision will be announced at the July council meeting on Monday evening.

T.M.R. joins other jurisdictions in requiring masks to protect against COVID-19 and limit its spread. Public health and government authorities strongly recommend the wearing of masks, to be accompanied by other measures, including social distancing and frequent hand washing.

A Montreal-wide mandatory mask policy comes into effect on July 27. The wearing of masks is now required on public transit in Quebec. Quebec announced last week wearing masks will be mandatory on public transit as of July 13, followed by a two-week grace period.

Côte-St-Luc passed a bylaw June 1 requiring masks for shopping in the municipality or entering a municipal building. The west-end municipality was one of Quebec’s first COVID-19 hot zones.
