MEXICO CITY — Jesus Murillo, the former Attorney General of Mexico who worked under former President Enrique Peña Nieto, has been charged with enforced disappearance, torture and obstruction of justice in the 2014 disappearance of 43 students. The arrests have been made, Mexican authorities said Friday.

The Office of the Attorney General said in a statement that federal police had issued an arrest warrant for Jesus M., and a source with the agency confirmed Murillo.

He served as Attorney General from his 2012 to his 2015. Meanwhile, Murillo was overseeing his highly critical investigation into the 2014 disappearance of 43 of his students.

International experts criticized official investigations as riddled with errors and abuses, and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed what happened in the disappearances.
