No. 2 seed Tsitsipas reaches Hamburg quarters

No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece moved into the quarterfinals of the Hamburg European Open with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory Thursday over Uruguayan qualifier Pablo Cuevas in Germany.

Tsitsipas saved four break points at 4-4 and another at 5-5 before clinching the first set on Cuevas’ double fault. He broke Cuevas at love in the final game to finish off his 20th match win of the season in one hour and 31 minutes.

“I have a lot of respect for him. He is a very difficult opponent to face, particularly on this surface (clay),” Tsitsipas said. “He is a good friend and one of my idols growing up. It was a great match and I enjoyed it.”

His quarterfinal opponent is Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic, who breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 upset of No. 8 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia. Lajovic struck 15 winners and improved to 4-0 against Khachanov, who tallied 20 unforced errors in the 62-minute match.

Another quarterfinal pits Norway’s Casper Ruud against Frenchman Ugo Humbert. Ruud knocked out No. 6 seed Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-3. Humbert eliminated the Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely 6-4, 6-3.
