No love for Valentine’s Day at Kitchener elementary school

There will be no love letters or chocolates at on Ontario school that has has banned Valentine’s Day this year.

Jean Steckle Public School in Kitchener recently made the decision.

“While we acknowledge the celebration of Valentine’s Day and are mindful of the popularity of that day, it is not celebrated by all students/families in our community,” a letter sent to parents states.

The schools says Valentine’s Day could negatively impact families and students

In 2021, the school banned paper Valentine’s as non-essential materials that could spread disease.

The Waterloo Regional District School Board told CTV that Valentine’s Day could be a “financial strain” on some families who can’t afford candy or cards.

The school believes Valentine’s Day harms equality goals and that having candy goes against the Healthy Schools approach.
