Canada plans to require companies to add nutritional warnings to the front of packaged foods that contain high levels of saturated fat, sugar, or sodium.
However, minced meat will be exempt from the label after a group of ranchers opposes Health Canada's proposal earlier this month.
New labels usually complement rather than replace the more detailed nutritional information on the back of food packaging.
Packaged foods, such as minced meat and milk, that are considered to have health benefits despite their high levels of these nutrients are not labeled. The
rule is set to take effect in early 2026, and the government states that it will give companies ample time to control the cost of adjusting packages.
