Ottawa’s Transit Commission will be made up of elected officials

Ottawa council has voted to eliminate citizen representation on the city’s transit commission.

A motion from councillors Jessica Bradley and Sean Devine at today’s meeting aimed to keep citizen transit commissioners until a new advisory committee is in place.

Bradley says taking away the public’s seat at the table would not be wise, given the erosion of public trust after the release of a scathing report last week into the failures of the light rail transit system.

The commission used to be made up of eight councillors and four residents, who were responsible for overseeing the transit system and making recommendations to council.

The new advisory board was created to replace citizen representatives on the commission, with the hope of allowing them to share their thoughts while separating their responsibilities from that of elected officials.
